A straw chateau in the Dordogne countryside

The day PureFrance.com discovered a straw chateau in the Dordogne, south west France

At first glance as we sped past the chateau of straw en-route to take pictures of even more prestigious properties for the site of Pure France, we were taken by the novelty and ingenuity of the sedentary spectacle of this lonely and iconic French symbol.

An about turn, which caused the little voice behind the dashboard to exclaim, "turn around when possible" held no sway as we headed back to take a closer look.
And there it was, the chateau of someones dream. On closer examination all the attributes of a good rental property were exposed for all to see. The doors stood at a height of at least seven feet, tall enough for the most exacting of Pure France clients. Four towers facing all four points of the compass, maximising exposure to the sun at any time of the day. Far reaching views, clear blue skies and easy access with a main road only metres away.

We wanted to sign it up but the owner was absent, probably cutting more straw trying to fulfil his new found calling with sights set on a lottisment buried deep within the Dordogne countryside. So satisfaction came with photographs only, which after all is why we were there in the first place.

The Straw Chateau had served it’s purpose. Local exhibitions and local artisans used similar displays to attract attention for festivals. I guess health and safety and the road traffic act in the UK would have prevented such things as a danger to mankind but here in France the only danger we faced was missing a photo opportunity, and thankfully the light was right!
