Introduction

Villa Les Aiguilles is south facing and enjoys a completely uninterrupted view of the ancient Cathar ruin, which dominates Durban village.

This view is framed almost centrally, through the south facing doors of the lounge (leading through to the pool terrace) and the upstairs bedrooms (leading onto a private sun terrace).

The villa enjoys a peaceful garden with 9m x 5m pool, which is surrounded by a magnificent hardwood deck area on which to sunbathe or admire the views.

The interior has been designed and furnished to an extremely high standard. It has 5 large bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, one of which has a lovely stone basin and colourful tiles from Bisbal in neighboring Catalunya.

The village of Durban is a short walk away and ensures that all the essential amenities are close at hand, including a supermarket, patisserie/boulangerie and post office.

You are also only 8 minutes' drive to the village of Fontjoncouse which has a restaurant run by a Michelin-starred chef, Gilles Goujon, serving food which is amazingly refined and elegant while still bursting with the local flavours of tomato, olive oil, goats' cheese, thyme.....definitely worth the trip.

The beaches of Peyriac-de-Mer is 20 km away, this is a lovely fishing village on the bank of the lagoon. Drive slowly, and admire the view. Part of the lagoon has been declared a nature reserve and this is a good place for spotting flamingos, herons, storks and other maritime birds.

To visit the fortified City of Carcassonne is to be transported back seemingly to the middle ages. It is the largest fortress in Europe. From the villa you are under an hour's drive.

Should you wish to travel further afield, you are less than an hour and a half away from the major metropolitan centres of Montpellier and Toulouse, while over the border in Spain, Girona is 15km and Barcelona is 230km.

Local Information

Location:

There have been settlements in the town of Durban since Roman times. The château on its hill is a reminder of the chequered history of the Languedoc, criss-crossed throughout history by opposing forces; it was originally built by the kings of Aragon and was remodeled in the 16 century.

From Villa Les Aiguilles you are ideally located 30km from the Mediterranean Sea at Cap Leucate and within easy reach of the ancient cities of Perpignan and Carcassonne.

The nearby coastal towns and villages:

Bages - 35 minutes - A picturesque fishing village on a steep rocky outcrop overlooking the Etang de Bages with its transient population of pink flamingoes.

Sigean - 25 minutes - The kingdom of pink flamingoes, egretrs and seagulls. This is the home of the popular Réserve Africaine (safari park). Absolutely unmissable if you have children.

Port-la-Nouvelle - 30 minutes - A popular resort with miles of sandy beaches, lots of entertainment during the summer.

Gruissan - 45 minutes - A village, port and beach all rolled into one. Great for sunbathing or wind surfing on either the lake or sea. Lovely sandy beach with pretty little cafes.

La Franqui - 40 minutes - This is the oldest resort on this part of the coast, and the beach is lined with splendid thirties villas adorned with balconies, their large windows looking out over the sea.

From the headland above La Franqui there are stunning views over the coast and the Mediterranean itself; it is a popular spot for walking and mountain biking, particularly in spring when the limestone outcrops are covered with flowers.

Nearby main towns:

Perpignan - 55 minutes - Nestling between mountain and sea and is strongly influenced by Barcelona. It's lively, sunny, palm lined squares and good food and wine make it a great place to visit.

Carcassonne - 55 minutes - The city's drawbridges, machicolations and 52 towers can be visited on foot, by train or in an open carriage. It was this fortified city that provided Walt Disney with the inspiration for the castle in his version of Sleeping Beauty. Carcassonne is world famous and unique in terms of its architectural heritage.

Narbonne - 35 minutes - Wander around the historic remains in the shade of the plane trees, through narrow winding streets, along the bank of the Canal de la Robine. Narbonne also has a great indoor market open daily and is full of fresh local produce.

Activities:

If you can tear yourself away from the many wonderful restaurants and bars in this beautiful part of the Languedoc, you might want to try some of the following activities:

Riding - Riding stables offering lessons and proper riding sorties for experienced riders are close by at Portel-des Corbieres.

White water rafting and canoeing - Axat - 1hr 10min - Gushing from the Pyrenees the Aude provides ideal conditions for the white water sports.

Sailing and windsurfing - Natural lakes, marine lakes and the Mediterranean beaches - the Aude provided sailing enthusiasts with an ideal environment for initiation or improvement. Narbonne-Plage, Port la Nouvelle, Gruissan and Leucate are resorts known world wide as the best locations for sail and fun board activities.

Golf - Carcassonne golf club - an 18 hole golf course, practice, clubhouse and equipment hire.
