Local Information
The property is located south of Narbonne, amongst 8 hectares of vineyards. 10 min to lovely Mediterranean beaches at Gruissan and Narbonne Plage. All amenities including fabulous hypermarket, 1 min drive.
Gruissan, Narbonne Plage and neighboring resort of St Pierre sur Mer have a huge range of beachfront entertainments and waterside activities. Something for all ages.
Endless choice of pavement cafés and restaurants. All the glamour and glitz of a Mediterranean resort - plenty of lively or laid-back quiet bars to choose from in the evening.
Bicycle hire in Gruissan (6 miles away) where from the top of the castle Barberousse, you get brilliant views of the village streets laid in concentric rings, the islands, the mountains, the salt pans and the sea spread around you.
The beaches are very child-friendly, and many areas are quite uncrowded.
Narbonne has an interesting gothic cathedral, medieval quarter and Roman remains, some good restaurants and a peaceful past, reflected in a serene town centre.
Nearby (30 mins) is Carcassonne, the most romantic medieval skyline anywhere.
Corbieres, where interesting and serious wine makers are now well-established and you can stop at towns like Lagrasse, a really gorgeous place in the fold of a hill, unspoilt, medieval and facing a Benedictine monastery across a river. Everyone swims in a little lagoon looking up at the twelfth century bridge.
15 miles to the Cisterian Abbaye de Fontfroide with lovely rose garden and a good restaurant.
The best bits of the Canal du Midi (connecting the Atlantic with the Mediterranean, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site) run through the country to the north and east of the house. You can walk, bike or boat along it in the shade of the plane trees.
Pezenas (30 min) is an almost entirely seventeenth century town thirty miles east of the house, exquisitely grand for somewhere so small.
Montpellier with its opera, mansions and vibrant city centre, is under an hour away.
The kayaking is wonderful in the Montagnes Noires, pretty Victorian spa towns have wide and slow stretches of the Orb where tinies can bob about, and fast exciting stretches for the others.
For serious "white water" enthusiasts, there are good rivers in the Pyrenees, also about an hour away. Similarly, Figueires, the Dali Museum and Barcelona are all not far to the south.
Each beach along the coast has a different flavour to it.
Away from the coast, beautiful scenery among the vineyards and Languedoc countryside. Unspoilt, medieval villages to discover, large Safari Park at nearby Sigean.
Budget airlines fly into Montpellier (50 miles), Perpignan (35 miles), Carcassonne (50 miles), Nimes and Toulouse (both 95 miles), and Barcelona (150 miles). The super-fast train, the TGV goes to Montpellier from Paris in 4 hours. Local connections go on to Narbonne, which is also where the Autorail, (cartrain) arrives direct from the UK, Paris or Lille.
