The nearby, beautiful Canal du Midi is a great respite from the busy beaches. Made famous recently by Rick Stein's BBC TV series, the canal offers miles of flat, tree-lined, shady footpaths with many waterside bars and restaurants.

Narbonne has an interesting gothic cathedral, medieval quarter and Roman remains, some good restaurants and a peaceful past, reflected in a serene town centre.

Carcassonne 35 mins the most romantic medieval skyline anywhere and has great summer medieval festivals and spectacular evening firework displays.
