Local Information

The property is located in an exclusive residential area, set amongst forest-land and single-track lanes. Aix-en-Provence 5 min drive. Nearest restaurant is 2 min drive.

Aix-en-Provence is set in the heart of beautiful Provence - a stunning town with all amenities. A tour of Aix en Provence is a chance to travel in time. Its architectural and cultural heritage is accessible to everyone, treasures that you will discover simply by walking around the town.

In Aix en Provence there are as many markets as days in the week. From the vegetable market to the old book market, without forgetting the flower market, these animate the town with colors and sound.

The old town: On the site of the former Roman town, stretching from the Cathedral to the Church Tower (Town Hall). Some of the small streets have kept their evocative names, such as the rue Esquicho-coudo, a narrow passage dating from the middle ages. Ruins of the old medieval ramparts may also be seen right at the top of the rue Gaston de Saporta.

An abundance of superb restaurants and café bars.

Olive oil: 25 centuries ago the Greeks planted the olive tree deep in the region. The olive has become one of the main ingredients of Provençal cuisine: tapenade (a purée of black or green olives), table olives and of course, olive oil.

Olive tree capital since the 18th century, Aix has kept its olive heritage alive and has transmitted the symbolic message of peace through this treasure of nature. There are over 2000 olive growers and close to 300,000 olive trees in Aix today.

Mont Saint Victoire: A symbol of Provence like Mount Ventoux and the Sainte Baume massif, the major landmark of the Aix area, and a favourite motif of Cézanne, Mont Sainte-Victoire reaches an altitude of 1011m at Pic des Mouches.

At the foot of the northern slopes of Sainte-Victoire is the little village of Vauvenargues, stretched along a green vale. The castle, a large square 14th and 15th century building, stands apart on a hillock. It was bought in 1958 by Picasso, who was buried in the grounds.

Vauvenargues: Less than 10 min from the house. Situated on the border between the Departments of the Var and the Bouches du Rhône, Vauvenargues covers a vast territory at the foot of the north massif of Mount Sainte-Victoire. The valley surrounding the village is beautiful, with an undisturbed natural environment. Delightful walks are possible following the sign-posted tracks which cross Vauvenargues.

To see: 16th century church with Roman sector dating back to the 5th century. Gouffre du Garagaï. La Glacière. Vallon des Masques. Citadel.

To do: Friday morning market. Hiking (except July/August). Fishing. Tennis. Arts and crafts and cultural events. Village festival, first weekend in July.

1 Hotel-restaurant. 3 restaurants.

One of France’s premier tourist attractions, Les Baux lies close by; an 11th century village built into the rocks.

The Roman town of Arles is also nearby. Many Roman and Romanesque monuments are still in use today; the amphitheatre provides the setting for bullfights and concerts, and what remains of the theatre plays host to formal concerts and traditional folk festivities throughout the year. The Cathedral of St Trophime, with its magnificent doorway depicting the Last Judgement carved in stone and its beautiful cloisters, is open to the public for visits and Sunday services. The necropolis, or Alyscamps, is today a narrow, tree-lined avenue, located just outside the old town.

Many lovely restaurants and pavement cafés. Van Gogh spent two years of his life here, so there are may related tours and souvenirs to be found.

Arles also boasts one of the regions finest markets every Wednesday and Friday. Overflowing with provencal goodies- fruits and vegetables, lavender products, soaps, olives, flowers, honey... The list is endless and makes the Arles market an event not to be missed !

Also not to be missed is a day out to Avignon to discover the winding streets and lovely Provençal shops. Here you’ll find the wonderful ‘Pope’s Palace’ –the former home of the Pope which really is spectacular. And the infamous ‘half-bridge’ !

For wine lovers, this is paradise; domaines and tasting almost on every corner.

The lovely Camargue National Park lies close by. You really will see black bulls, pink flamingos and white horses. Many horse and pony-trekking ranches and great choice of Mediterranean beaches.

Other great suggestions for a day out; all with lovely Mediterranean beaches: St Tropez 90 mins. Cannes 90 mins. Hyères 70 mins. Cassis 30 mins.

Also, don't miss the spectacular Gorges du Verdon.
