Location

The property is situated in open countryside 10 minutes from Ribérac, 30 minutes from Périgueux.

Bakery 2 km. Local town of Verteillac, 4 km with bakery, three cafés, four restaurants, butcher and grocery store.

All amenities in Ribérac, a charming market town with café bars, restaurants, all shops and lovely market on Friday mornings. Two supermarkets. Cheap weekly tennis membership. Courts available early till late!

There are small beaches on the river Dronne at Saint-Aulaye and Aubeterre where you can swim safely. Aubeterre is one of the show villages of France and has a farmers' market on Sundays where greens, veg, fruit and cheese can be purchased and the local butcher and baker are open until mid-day.

Chalais. About 30 minutes away over the border in the Charente, Chalais features the nearest visitable château which dominates the town. The market here is on Mondays, closing at mid-day.

Brantôme, 30 minutes, a lovely town with excellent retaurants. Canoeing available.

Le Grand lac Jemaye, 15 minutes from the property with sandy beach area, children's play-area, cafés and canoeing.

Périgueux (30 minutes). The département town of the Dordogne is situated on the river Isle. The old quarter is full of boutiques for a spot of retail therapy and it goes without saying cafés and restaurants. There are Roman ruins and several museums. The Cathédrale Saint-Front is very impressive, especially when viewed from the other side of the river. This was rebuilt in 1852 by the architect Abadie, who used the design as the basis for the more famous Sacré-Coeur basilica in Paris. The church of Saint-Étienne-de-la-Cité dating from the 12th century is also worthy of your time.

Bergerac (approximately 1 hour). Though everybody has heard of Cyrano the hero of Edmond Rostand's play was inspired by the 17th century philosopher Cyrano de Bergerac whose name had nothing to do with the town. Bergerac is the tobacco capital of France as well as being the centre for the Bergerac 'brand' of very drinkable wines. The old town is very interesting with the riverside port originating from the time Bergerac was a link between the coast and the interior regions of the Auvergne and Limousin.

Saint-Émilion (approximately 1 hour). Very picturesque, giving its name to one of the most famous of the French wine areas. Naturally the main focus is on the wine trade and tours of the châteaux and wine tasting can be arranged at the local tourist office. There is also another église monolithique to compare with the one at Aubeterre.

Cognac (approximately 1½ hours). Situated on the river Charente and owing its name to a prominent Roman, Cognac is a historic town which evolved and gave its name to one of the world's most famous eau-de-vie. Tours of the distilleries, where you can enter into the spirit of things, can be arranged at the local tourist office. Boat trips can be taken upstream to Angoulême.

We have stayed in many French farmhouses over the years, the whole family agree that Le Malardier is the best by far. We have had a fabulous holiday. The youngsters have enjoyed the pool and working on their tans. We’ve all loved the opportunity to sit and watch the wild life and the beautiful landscape. Although it has been incredibly hot the house is wonderfully cool. We would love to come back!

The 8 of us (three generations) have had a fabulous time at Le Malardier. The house is gorgeous and very comfortable while the views were breathtaking. I fulfilled my ambition to sit at least once in all the outside seats to enjoy the many views! We are leaving with beavy hearts. Highly recommended, a meal cooked by Louise - better than many restaurants!

We are truly sad to be leaving this incredible house, beautiful landscape and extraordinary people. We have felt truly ‘at home’ here and have so enjoyed being ‘en famille’ in such a wonderful house. Thank You - If ever there was a place in which a family could be together after such a long time, if ever there was a place in which the sense of welcome, of peace and of the love of many generations, if ever there was a place in one's imagination of such beauty, both within and without ancient walls, then Le Malardier is that place. We have been sublimely happy and this week will remain hugely precious to us all.

Andrew, Natalie, Ella and Hannah. August 2021.
We had a most wonderful week here in your beautiful house. The house, gardens and pool were exactly what we needed, so much that we rarely felt the need to venture out other than for supplies. We all hope to return again soon.

Thank you so much for a lovely stay at your beautiful house. The weather wasn’t the best but just being here with the cows and enjoying all the little touches in the house was enough for us - oh and we still enjoyed the pool! We were also luck to see some shooting stars which was magical. We hope to come back.

Truly the most magical and enchanting holiday home we’ve ever stayed in. The views are heavenly and the design and architectural features of the house are so wonderful and unique it’s like being in an Aladdin’s Cave. 60th Wedding Anniversary, clan gathering 3 generations... and... Richard and Gay entertained us royally in their 'new' home. How could they bear to leave Le Malardier... Great boon was the virtually total absence of wasps and flies. Here's to the 65th!

We have had a wonderful relaxing week at Le Malardier. The house is stunning and photographs do not do it justice. We loved watching the sun rise, taking in the view with our morning coffee. The pool and pool house have been enjoyed by all. Leisurely lunches in the outdoor dining area and a game of boules in the evening. Many thanks to Richard and Gay who have been so helpful and superb hosts.

The views and layout of the property are very suitable for a large family group. The years of construction and design have really paid off. So, thank you for your kind hospitality.

Thank you SO much for giving us the opportunity to stay in your beautiful home. Malardier was everything we could have wished for and more. How lucky was I to have celebrated my Birthday in such a fab place! A truly memorable week. Thank you.

Lewis family.
Dear Gay and Richard thank you endlessly for sharing your beautiful house with us! Having stayed in many beautiful places it is safe to say this one has been the ultimate. Gutted to be writing this as it means goodbye but thankful to have discovered a mini paradise. Once again thank you. We hope to see you again.

What a wonderful week. La Malardier is the most dreamy of places to stay. We ate top dollar food, swam in the pool in stonking sunshine, drank our fill. Amazing setting. Beautiful view. We will remember this week forever more. We would like to block book Malardier forever, until next year - viva la France.

We have stayed in many wonderful houses in different parts of the world. Malardier is without doubt the most wonderful. Everything beautiful or useful (William Morris) mostly both. Having restored many houses ourselves we appreciate the enormous work involved. One forgets too easily the half built walls. What makes this house more special than most others is that it is a home. Every object has character and must carry a story. We were amazed at the gardens, how plants bloom in such a warm climate. We will no doubt remember different things, but all have lovely memories.

We have spent a lovely week at your stunning home. What a treat! Wish we could spend longer but work is calling.

Feeling a little sad writing this as it means bidding farewell to a very special place but delighted to be leaving with some wonderful memories of an extremely enjoyable week.

What a wonderful house. Superb vistas - just like a second home - we don't want to leave (which is why we are still here!). We've explored, swam all day in the pool, drunk many bottles of Rose and canoed. Thank you so much.

Eight days at Malardier after the brash noise of the Hamptons in August was underlined as I walked past the dried sunflowers. What was that sound? Only a breeze moving stealthily through the stalks hushing its way to the end of the meadow. An hours walk completed, a years stress melted away.

3 generations of joy - great week being together in an amazing setting. Thank you for your welcome. Weather wonderful.

We had a fantastic week at La Malardier. It has been so peaceful and relaxing pottering around the beautiful garden and swimming in the pool. The weather has been rather mixed but the week has flown by and we are all very sorry to be leaving.

Collinson family.
We had a lovely week enjoying the beautiful house and pool and breakfast and barbecues outside. We had highly variable weather but that enabled us to discover Périgueux and Saint-Émilion. We highly recommend Aubeterre and the bar Brasserie in Verteillac Le Calice. Many thanks.

Thank you for such a wonderful week. The house is perfect and we loved how many different places there were in the garden to sit and have a drink / admire the beautiful view. It was lovely to meet you both and thanks for being so helpful (and telling us about the Friday market in Ribérac!). Fantastic holiday - hoping to return next year!

We had a wonderful week. The property is just fantastic and we will cherish the memories our family have made here.

We had the most wonderful time in your lovely old house. Although there were only 4 of us we made the most of the available outside space, eating each meal in a different area, depending on the shade. You were the most perfect hosts and we hope to see you again one day.

Thank you for a memorable week staying in your beautiful house. It is everything you could wish for for a relaxing week away from our busy lives! As it was hot we didn't venture far (apart from a kayaking trip from Riberac) and enjoyed the pool, the BBQ and spending time together as friends. Really perfect.

Really enjoyed our week staying in your lovely home. Setting beautiful. Countryside we managed to see some lovely deer and especially enjoyed the humming birds -so tiny. We managed to explore the local markets and some towns. The children loved the pool. Many thanks for everything.

Le Malardier is delightful. It is so much more than just a holiday home. Every room makes you want to step inside. The house has been so sympathetically restored and is quite clearly a labour of love. Richard and Gay were also the perfect hosts and couldn't have done more to welcome us. If your thinking of booking a week or two at Malardier, do it. You won't be disappointed.

We had a truly fantastic family holiday for 6 adults and 4 children in this wonderful house in this stunning location. The house is spacious, imaginative, inviting, well equipped and has everything needed for a break away from it all. We chose to eat outside for every meal and were able to make the most of the different perspectives and views that the house offers. We loved the cooler early mornings watching the cattle and buzzard, the shade of the trees or the pool house in the heat of the day and the breeze in the evenings as we watched the clear constellations above us. The owners, Richard and Gaye, had exactly the right balance of friendliness and attentiveness if needed tempered with discretion about our privacy. We didn't explore the area as much as we had intended because the house provides so much and we really do hope to plan another holiday here in the near future.

We are off on an amazing two weeks in Le Malardier, a house full of character and so spacious. Thank you Gay and Richard.
Our American friends explored the area but we Brits who do not see the sun as much as them were more than happy to lounge around the pool. There was everything you could want in the house and the children were delighted with the toys in the attic! This is a beautiful part of France, the views are spectacular. We found some great restaurants and enjoyed the local culture. Au Revoir.

We loved our stay in your beautiful home and the solitude meant that the children and young were able to be as noisy as they liked. We managed Mummy with help from James and Toby. We brought the van to fit all the aids Mummy needs to make life easier. Our home is rambling with stone steps so she is used to being helped around. We enjoyed the pool and spent most of our time in the pool area. Living outdoors is part of the joy of our visiting France at this time of year. The weather was dry at least and when the sun came out it was an added bonus. We left Mummy, Pandora, Henry and Emilia to go canoeing from Brantôme to Bourdeilles which was lovely and great fun. There are enough places of interest within half an hour's drive to keep us entertained but enjoyed coming back to Malardier for our afternoon swims. Thank you for a lovely setting for our holiday.

All 7 of us had an amazing time at Richard and Gay's stunning villa. From the pool house to their courtyards to the kitchen, every one of their beautifully restored spaces added something different. Incredibly easy to deal with, they both looked after us from the minute we got in contact with them to the day we (extremely reticently!) left. They went above and beyond, booking us into a local restaurant for our first night and even doing a light shop so we wouldn't be without provisions when all the shops were shut! The house is surrounded by stunning scenery, with a seeming never ending supply of French villages, towns and monuments to explore. If we came back every year for the rest of our lives we still wouldn't see everything. Huge thanks to both and we will hopefully see you again soon!
