Map & local information
The property is situated in open countryside with no immediate neighbours between Fleurance and Condom. 40 min to Auch and 80 min to Toulouse.
Nearby town of Lectoure (10 min) lies almost on the border of the Gers and the Lot and Garonne.
The town has all amenities including restaurants and café bars and excellent small individual shops and a vibrant weekly market held on Friday morning.
Two nearby lakes with sandy beaches and water slides; Lac des Trois Vallees just outside Lectoure, which also has a mini golf course and at St Clar. For those wanting a more adventurous water park with lots of white knuckle rides there is the Walibi Aquitaine near Agen.
A number of vineyards in the area offer tours and tastings, a great way to get to know the local wines and armagnac's.
Many local and traditional markets, the best way to buy really fresh local produce and soak up the atmosphere in the local cafes. (You will find a comprehensive list of all the markets and festivals at the house). The world-famous jazz festival of Marciac is held every August.
Beautiful and relatively unknown small towns and villages to visit:
Just half-an-hour's drive from the house is Condom, a charming small town of elegant 18th century architecture. A popular way to see the town is by hiring a little motor boat on the River Baise, or taking a lunchtime cruise down the river. The town has excellent shops and all amenities including very good, traditional restaurants.
Auch, the capital of the Gers is the centre for Armagnac and Foie Gras and the busy weekly markets are the best way to sample the local fare! The Cathédrale de Sainte-Mere with its remarkable 15th century stain glass is worth a visit, look out for the imposing statue of one of the Gascony's best loved heroes, D'Artagnan.
Fleurance with its famous canopied market square is the perfect place for a quiet drink and browse round the market as is St Clar (25kms) with its weekly garlic market and narrow streets.
Only 6 kms away is the La Romieu, designated a world heritage sight with the breathtaking C14th abbey-church of Saint Pierre.
Horse Racing at Castera Verduzan.
Larrasingle (38 km) is the smallest bastide in France and well worth visiting perhaps combining with Seviac, a former Gallo-Roman villa with its beautifully preserved mosaics and series of baths. Just five minutes up the road is Montreal the oldest bastide in Gascony.
The area also offers great walking and cycling. There are numerous detailed maps in the house and the Tourist Office in Lectoure has additional guides and can also advise on bike hire and for a more leisurely way to see the area riding stables. There are golf courses at Eauze and Fleurance and horse racing and trotting at Auch and Fleurance.
This is a beautiful area; surrounded by hills, amid cornfields and vines, at an average height of 82 metres, the region enjoys a micro-climate with lush, luxuriant plants in summer, which even in winter keep most of their foliage thanks to a mild average temperature (about 13°) which is hardly different from that of Biarritz and Marseille in the deep south.
Further restaurants and interesting villages to discover are in the immediate locale.
