Local Information
The medieval village of Caux (population 2,905) is located deep in the heart of the Languedoc vineyards, 6 kilometres north of Pézenas, between Béziers and Montpellier. Mediterranean coast is 16 miles.
Walking distance (300m) to the heart of the village with all amenities; grocery store, wine outlets, café bars / restaurants, bakery, post-office, weekly market etc.
The renaissance town of Pézenas is a 5 minute drive for huge choice of fantastic, traditional restaurants and pavement cafés and bars. Unmissable Saturday market. Beautiful architecture amongst the winding streets. Artisan shops and many cultural events during summer - concerts and festivals etc. Four supermarkets and many antique shops.
Mediterranean coastline with almost endless child-friendly beaches. All watersports, restaurants and cafés.
Wine-tasting all around in the Languedoc vineyards. 'Le Prieuré de St. Jean de Bébian' is one of the oldest vineyards in France dating back to 1152.
Cap d'Agde (25 mins) has further beaches and watersports, boat trips, beautiful harbour, golf, casino, fashionable shopping, nightclubs, waterfront restaurants and the very chic in-crowd of holiday-makers from Paris.
Béziers (25 mins) has perhaps the best flower market in the whole of the south on Fridays in the beautiful tree-lined main boulevard. 4 day traditional party ('Féria') in August. Excellent covered market and large hypermarkets.
Don't miss a visit to the famous Canal du Midi which links the Atlantic with the Mediterranean. Miles of flat walks along the shady toe-paths, occasionally interrupted by fabulous cafés and restaurants. Nowadays, the only commercial traffic on the canal is the occasional barge loaded with wine. Boat hire is readily available and is a lovely way to discover the vineyards of Minervois or Corbieres.
Lake Salagou (40 mins) offers an alternative to the busy coast, with its freshwater lake swimming and watersports. Spectacular scenery in the Languedoc National Park, with opportunities for walking and trekking.
