Map & local information
The property is located on the edge of the charming, Mediterranean harbour town of Marseillan.
Marseillan is one of the few remaining unspoilt small harbour towns of the western Mediterranean and is between Beziers and Montpellier. It has been twice featured on the BBC Travel programme, as a stopover for canal cruising, and in 2004 as an ideal base for exploring the Languedoc. The main port is busy and wide open to the sun, a fine place to meet friends for a drink or dinner as the sun goes down.
There are plenty of shops to browse and choose between; excellent bread, local fruit and vegetables, and two supermarkets. Local growers and fishermen have stalls in the covered market, open three days a week, and on Tuesdays a typical open market sets up in the squares and streets of the centre. In high summer there is an evening Friday craft market.
Eating out is easy: there are over a dozen restaurants, at all prices, along the port and in the centre of town. Try Chez Philippe's 'cuisine gorgée de soleil' : a must for lovers of serious and innovative food. It was awarded a 'coup de coeur' from France's main foodie magazine, Saveurs.
Along the quayside of the main port, sit in a waterside brasserie, watch the boats come and go, and wonder how they do such a three-course lunch for such a low price.
And when you have tried all they have to offer, take a drive to the waterfronts of Mèze or Bouzigues, or up to Sète, to the open beach, or the restaurants along the main canal, and taste some more....There's a good choice of take-away food: pizzas and pasta; fresh roast chickens and beef from the butcher; and elegant dishes from a traîteur.
Marseillan is well-known for its Picpoul de Pinet white wine: ideal with shellfish. The Languedoc is the world's largest vineyard.
Just to the other side of the house is the Port des Pêcheurs, and beyond that a newly-opened park and children's play area.
The Étang de Thau is alive with boats - and full of oysters and mussels. If you bring a boat, there's a slipway just by. You can take short cruises across the étang to the oyster and mussel beds on the Etoile de Thau, or go to Sète or Cap d'Agde. Boats can be hired for the day or week: sailing boats in Marseillan, and motor boats along the coast: the nearest is at Marseillan Plage.
The beautiful Canal du Midi, listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO, starts here. It stretches for 240 kilometres, for much of the way under huge sheltering plane trees. The canal path is ideal for walking or cycling on a hot summer day.
From the house you're a short walk to the famous Noilly Prat distillery. Noilly Prat, which is a popular French aperitif has been distilled in Marseillan since 1843. Look around & see how it is made, taste the fruits & buy from the shop. Try it as a long cool refreshing summer drink with tonic or lemonade.
Marseillan is on the Etang du Thau, which has a tradition for oyster & mussel farming, providing the area with a rich source for food & wealth. It is possible to take a short tour of the oyster & mussel beds.
The local produce of this area goes hand in hand with the regional wine produced. Try some in one of the many good restaurants in Marseillan - or buy some to prepare back at the house.
Marseillan is also where the Canal du Midi meets the Mediterranean. The canal du Midi is great for walking in the shade of the riverside trees, cycling, fishing & canoeing. You can hire boats for day trips, stopping at many tucked away restaurants along the way.
The surrounding area:
The Languedoc is the largest wine producing area of France with a great number of wines awarded AOC status. Why not visit some of the very hospitable vineyards and taste some of the local produce or to gain more insight into the wine producing methods.
You are only a 5-minute drive to the local beach, which is 10 miles of uninterrupted golden sand and with a water depth that shelves gently, so is extremely safe for families.
In addition you are 10 minutes drive to the lively seaside town of Cap d'Agde, which has: Beach Bars, Windsurfing, Sailing & Motor Boats, Naturist Area (away from the main beaches), Aqualand Water Park, 18 Hole Golf Course, Boat trips, Tennis courts, Café Bars & Restaurants, Night Clubs.
Why not also visit the medieval city of Carcassonne which is only an hour's drive away. In this beautiful fortified city you can choose to soak up the history by taking a guided walk, strolling freely, or soak up the local wine sitting al fresco enjoying the ambiance.
