Nick Chubb starts this series by explaining how to cancel a house policy in France

When it comes to insurance, each country has its own customs and rules. It does not follow that the same rules, terms and conditions apply as in one’s homeland.

Unsurprisingly, insurance in France has many characteristics, rules and covers which are particular to itself.

It is important to understand the product one is purchasing. Over time, through this blog, we hope to explain the special features of French insurance.

Let’s start with canceling house policies. Many overseas clients think that they can cancel an insurance policy at their discretion. This is not the case in France - there is a special process to be followed:

One can only cancel a policy from the renewal date and there are two ways to do it, otherwise the current Insurer has the right to enforce the continuation of the policy for the whole of the following year.

By registered letter 2 months or more prior to the renewal date stating that cancellation is required from the renewal.

If this window of opportunity is missed, a second chance is possible under the Loi Chatel. This is again by registered letter, requesting cancellation from renewal, but must be sent within 20 days of the postmark on the envelope delivering the renewal demand.
