Map & local information
The property is the only house on a stony lane that opens out suddenly to wonderful views across a steep valley, a couple of kilometres outside the village of St Antoine de Ficalba, between Agen to the south (15 min) and Villenueve-sur-Lot to the north (10 min).
The house has belonged to a well-known Danish/French potter, whose works are displayed in the Louvre, and her tiles and pots have been used to great effect in the restoration of the house, adding to its individuality. There are even two pots on the top of the roof! It has been furnished with a mix of French and Scandinavian antiques, with a few pieces of modern Danish design for good measure.
While some may be happy to laze around the pool, with its plunging view of the valley below, it would be a pity to miss out on one of the great charms of the area around the house, which is the variety of walks: use the maps provided and discover tracks through fields and forests, to little romanesque churches in the middle of the fields, through valleys full of variety and lovely views, all of which allow you to get a sense of life in rural France. You will certainly see some of the local deer, squirrels, rabbits and watch the birds of prey circling above. There are also horse-riding centres nearby, and canoeing on the Lot River from Penne and Villeneuve.
Evenings can be spent on the terrace watching the last of the sun glowing on the only house visible from Laspeyres Basses, on the other side of the valley, while in the mornings, Laspeyres Basses and its terrace are drenched in sun.
The surrounding area is full of “bastides” (fortified hill villages), such as Pujols (great Sunday, market and a Michelin-starred restaurant, as well as a fun “cheap and cheerful” Sardinian restaurant) and Penne d’Agenais topped by a basilica with a shining metal dome that can be seen for miles around. The old village is a warren of little streets and lovely old stone houses that wind up the hill to the basilica and lovely views across the countryside. Penne has various artisan workshops and several reasonably priced restaurants.
Further afield, there is Monflanquin with its winding streets and fabulous views. All amenities in the village including large supermarket, cafés, restaurants, bakeries
Traditional street market every Thursday morning which has allegedly been going since the 12th Century !
The Dordogne area of France is one of the most beautiful and one of the most popular. Lovely countryside interspersed with medieval, bastide towns and fairytale châteaux rise from the morning mist.
It’s a great region for food lovers; all the Perigordian specialities such as Foie Gras, confit d'oie and canard, mushrooms of all types are in abundance.
Many antique markets throughout the year. All info at the tourist information office.
