Introduction

Château Germaine

This is a truly outstanding, unique property set in 60 hectares of private grounds with South-facing gardens and olive grove, just 40 minutes from Nice and its Mediterranean beaches and international airport.

Superbly secluded, private property dating back to the 17th century, the château has been beautifully restored and brought into the 21st century to offer wonderfully welcoming, original and charming accommodation for up to 12 people.

The extensive terraced gardens have exceptional views and produce gourmet olive oil from its 300 olive trees within the estate.

Formal garden with dining table, lawn, fountain and Mediterranean flowers is accessed from the main living accommodation, together with an elevated, shaded dining terrace with panoramic views down the valley.

Further, private lawned garden with sun loungers. Shaded living / dining terrace with bar and BBQ area.

Private pool (circular) of 8m diameter, fully heated and with charming sun terrace with loungers.

Large front courtyard with olive trees and plenty of private parking from the long, private drive with electric gated entrance.

High quality accommodation over three floors; stunning entrance in high-ceilinged tower with original staircase.

Main living area and separate library / bar with doors opening to the garden.

Dining room - double aspect opening to garden and shaded dining terrace.

Fully-fitted, high quality contemporary kitchen with central island stools, double oven, dishwasher, oven and hob, cheese and drinks fridge. Stairs lead up to 1st ensuite bedroom.
Further ensuite bedroom on this level with 3 more ensuite bedrooms on the 1st floor, one with large living area.
Bedroom 6 is house in the tower with further ensuite bathroom.

The property sits in secluded countryside at the end of a long, single track lane leading down from the local village of Le Broc, 5 minutes drive. Nice and its international airport 40 minutes drive.

All amenities in Le Broc including three restaurants, café bar, bakery, grocery store, newsagent / tabac and post office.

Further amenities in the beautiful, hilltop town of Carros with further restaurants, café bars and grocery store etc.

HISTORICAL NOTE; The property dates back to the 17th century, but underwent restoration and modification in the 1960s by famous architect, André Svetchine. 'Of Russian origin, Svetchine established his reputation for creating classic masterpieces along the Riviera with commissions for Christian Dior, Marc Chagall, Aimé Maeght and the re-design of both La Mauresque (Somerset Maugham) and the Villa Claudia on Cap Ferrat. Many visiting the Colombe d’Or in Saint-Paul-de-Vence assume that the building has been there unchanged for centuries. In fact, this world-famous auberge was remodelled by André Svetchine and completed in 1950!'

It is utterly charming and unique. Visit soon before popularity prevents a booking!

We were a mixed age party of ten people, with five children and five adults. The property provided plenty of comfortable living space for us all, and two of the rooms were air conditioned, which was especially welcome for our septuagenarian member, during some of the hotter days.

The Lawrences, who own the property, could not have been more welcoming, and made us feel like family. Their rich military and Far Eastern history is immediately evident to the visitor, from the library to the withdrawing room. They have spared no expense: this really touches the senses visually and experientially. We awoke some days to sounds of wild boar foraging in their woodland, which meanders along the hillside for two kilometres to the South of the château. One morning we saw a russet doe grazing on the ancient olive terraces. Silence pervades, except for the 6 o'clock cannon that occasionally greets the ears from the village across the valley towards the Italian border. (Not loud enough to spill the preprandial....)

The place welcomes fun and entertainment. A touch of Cannes adorns the Great Hall. There is even a drinks fridge; and a cheese fridge; a wonderful dining terrace with pleasing vistas towards the Italian Alps in the North, the villages in the East and the exodus of the river valley to the South. A wander one floor below the main living quarters will find a bar next to a barbeque, providing a great retreat for an evening drink. Children love to explore the many pathways and secret places here, and this ancient castle, sitting proud on Roman terraces and once owned by the Conte de Martini, displays its origins and later accretions subtly and cohesively.

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday at Château Germaine - What an amazing house!

Mears family - UK

As we were heading up the mountain road to Germaine for our two week stay, we wondered what on earth had we let ourselves in for...Arriving at the large dark imposing gates filled with trepidation and anticipation we pushed the bell hopefully ...driving along the crunchy driveway looking out at the splendid valley views we were rewarded with what we had hoped for...a château...and on meeting Marion we just knew it was going to be perfect ,but then Robert appeared, and we were certain that it would be a wonderful holiday. Some place, one of our children was so smitten, he proposed marriage and was accepted there. It was so spacious and private for our party of 12, a real family party house, a perfect kitchen with even its cheese fridge, wine fridge, and the two dishwashers were in constant use. Each room and outside garden and bar spaces were individual and unique, and well used. The photographs certainly do not do justice to this atmospheric slice of perfection, but how could they, you need to be there. Germaine really rocks in every way...and the charm of the local village, the bar, shops, restaurants and it's inhabitants was a real testament to the esteem the Lawrence's are held in.

We had a fantastic holiday at Château Germaine. I would recommend it to anyone and we hope to return one day. Robert and Marion made us very welcome.
