Location
The property is situated on the edge of a small hamlet, 10 minutes from Saint-Jean-d'Angély (between Cognac and La Rochelle) surrounded by fields of maize and cattle. The nearest village is 3 minutes drive and has a grocery store, bakers, butchers, bank with cash point, garage, etc.
La Rochelle (40 minutes) is one of the prettiest harbour towns in France and is most famous for its old harbour and its three outstanding medieval towers.
The vibrant lifestyle attracts an international set and there are trendy bars and excellent restaurants aplenty.
The town is full of fascinating details: look out for the huge chain on the restaurant-filled Cours des Dames, under the Tour de la Chaîne. It used to be slung across the mouth of the harbour, between la Tour de la Chaîne and its felloe sentinel, the Tour Saint-Nicolas.
Third of la Rochelle's seafront towers is la Tour de la Lanterne, in which a huge candle was lit nightly as a beacon for incoming craft.
Another impressive piece of architecture on the harbour is the porte de la Grosse Horloge. Behind this portal, the town center is easily reached and on the bustling arcaded streets, you'll see plenty of fine architecture.
With its café and clubs, this is an exuberant town at any time of the year, but it excels during the summer with an international film festival and in mid-July, the nation's top musical happening, les Francofolies, in which French-speaking musicians and music-lovers from all over the world congregate. The songs may be French, but the ambiance is universal!
Other towns nearby: Cognac (30 minutes), Saint-Jean-d'Angély (20 minutes), Bordeaux (1 hour 15 minutes) and Poitiers (1 hour).
On the Atlantic coast, between the châteaux and the castles of the Loire Valley and the Bordeaux vineyards, lies Poitou-Charentes, one of the sunniest parts of the French Western coast.
Its mild climate - 2,250 hours of sunshine per year - makes it desirable to visit anytime from early spring to late autumn. A 300 mile-long coastline with fine sandy beaches, backed by fragrant pine forests, lively resorts such as La Rochelle, Royan and the islands of Oléron, Aix and Ré provide attractions to tempt everyone from the beachcomber to the bathing-belle.
Inland, the scene is one of serenity, with vast horizons and wooded valleys, the Poitou fens and Marais Poitevin, the soothing tranquility of canals, the valley of Vienne, the foothills of Charente and the Cognac vineyards.
Poitou-Charentes is one of France's best kept secrets: a sunny and serene land of green meadowlands, sandy beaches, pine forests, romantic marshlands and Romanesque churches overlooking a luminous landscape of cognac vineyards. Poitou-Charentes is a region whose unspoiled treasures and timeless rhythm welcome its visitors with Old World charm.
Cognac, the world's best-known brandy comes from the peaceful countryside surrounding the Charente River one hundred miles North of Bordeaux. This slow moving river, which King François I called the loveliest river in his kingdom, passes through a placid landscape of vineyards bathed by a clear and radiant light. A twenty-mile area called the 'golden circle' of cognac production encompasses Cognac and the second distilling town of Jarnac.
Cognac, the medieval town which bears the name of the region, is attractive with its narrow medieval cobbled streets and elegant Renaissance facades.
It is here that the fabled nectar has been created since the 17th Century and that the very air one breathes is permeated by the heavy scent of spirits evaporating from oak casks held in storage: this aroma is referred to as the 'angels's share'.
World famous firms such as Camus, Hennessy, Martell, Otard, Prince Hubert de Polignac, Rémy-Martin, Courvoisier and Renault-Bisquit are located here; each distillery has its own secret and unique process for mixing the various blends of its eaux-de-vie. Join a guided tour to learn about the double-distilling process that goes on in copper stills before the ageing in oak barrels where the precious liquor will improve, taking on its final bouquet and famous golden glow.
Take a barge or a small train and discover the history of cognac, its vineyards, distilleries and museums which show you not only how it is made but proudly display the oldest reserve of cognacs dating back to 1830. Then how about a taste!

The house is magnificent and is perfect for a relaxing break in the French countryside. It is also only a short drive from the beautiful towns of Saint Jean d'Angely and Rochefort. The house is set in peaceful grounds with a wonderful large swimming pool and well equipped games room. We stayed as a family of 10 with 4 children and had a fantastic week! Excellent communication with the hosts and 10 happy holidaymakers!

This is not our first time to this area of France. However staying at Maison Aubrée has topped all of our previous outings. Firstly, the outdoor and communal areas are very accommodating and super private. We really felt like we had our own space as a group and that definitely helped us to relax right away. The pool area and garden in particular is really spacious and totally private. Each room having its own bathroom was another huge plus and we found the bedrooms very comfortable. The local amenities are also really good. The Super U in Tonnay-Charente is huge and the recommended markets and local restaurants are also impressive. A thoroughly well enjoyed break and we would no doubt return again!

Fabulous week in a great space with everything we needed for our family holiday. We were a group of 9 and had plenty of space. We all loved the pool and used the games room. Outdoor and indoor dining areas were spacious and made for sociable meals for the whole family. Idyllic, quiet location surrounded by fields and local roads ideal for a morning run. We did need mosquito spray. I'd definitely book again!

We had a lovely week with 3 generations of family in these beautiful houses. It's the nicest venue we've stayed in during all the years we've been holidaying in France. The kitchens are very well equipped and had everything we needed. Apart from the lovely pool (with lots of comfy sunbeds), there was plenty to keep everyone occupied. The girls loved the karaoke and the boys played table tennis and went biking. Everyone commented on how comfortable the huge beds were and we were impressed with the quality of the furniture and fittings. This is obviously a loved family home and not just a rental. We didn't venture out very much (apart from supermarket trips) but, enjoyed visiting Saint Jean d'Angely on market day. Saint Jean d'Angely is a lovely little town with lots of shops and restaurants.

We have just had two wonderful relaxing weeks with family, friends a baby and dog at this beautiful home. Both properties were very well equipped and have been maintained to a high standard. The garden was safe for both children and dogs. The pool was gorgeous and an ideal escape from the soaring temperatures. Phil and Charlotte were excellent at keeping in touch to ensure everything was ok, even letting us know a tree had come down in a storm the night before we arrived. This had been ably dealt with by Tony the pool man by the time we arrived! The local village was small with an excellent Auberge serving delicious food, Rochefort offered a wider choice of restaurants. A fabulous property in a lovely rural location - we would definitely return.
