Location

The property is situated on the outskirts of Thonac, between Montignac (10 minutes) and Sarlat-la-Canéda (30 minutes) surrounded by lovely countryside, within a few minutes walk of woodland walks and fishing brooks.

Walking distance into Thonac with grocery and bread shop, restaurants.

10 minutes drive to Montignac with large supermarket and all amenities.

30 minutes to Sarlat-la-Canéda and 40 minutes to Périgueux.

Sarlat-la-Canéda, is a charming and busy traditional town with all amenities which is the capital of Périgord. Many good restaurants and cafés to discover. Excellent market on Saturday.

Hot air ballooning, various local companies. Micro-lite aircraft and light aircraft flights available from Sarlat - Domme aerodrome.

Paintball, very good site near La Roque-Gageac. La Roque-Gageac (approx 25 minutes) is a stunningly beautiful village under the towering cliffs. The village regularly wins France's 'Prettiest Village' competition. Good canoeing centre here.

Competing with La Roque-Gageac in the prettiness stakes is the village of Carennac. Elevated just above the South bank of the river, it is best known for its typical Quercy architecture and Romanesque priory. Further Romanesque art at the Saint-Pierre church in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne.

Perhaps the most famous of the Dordogne tourist attractions are the cave paintings around Les Eyzies.

There are more pre-historic caves in this area than you could ever visit in a day!

Les Eyzies lies at the heart of an unspoilt area of great natural beauty with rolling hills, tranquil rivers and fascinating cliff and rock formations. It has some of the world's most beautiful caves with outstanding stalactite and stalagmite crystallisations. And the cave-lined Vézère valley has been classified as a heritage site by UNESCO.

The most well-known of all is the cave at Lascaux, Montignac which was discovered in 1940. The paintings date back some 17,000 years.

Customer Reviews [17]

We arrived to the warmest of welcomes from the owners Caterina and Steve, for whom nothing was too much trouble. We have stayed in many lovely places over the years but this place is truly special and a perfect little gem... the interior is beautifully presented with many thoughtful touches, from the fresh flowers to the fragrance sticks... Caterina keeps the place fresh and immaculate, a home from home! Steve works hard to keep the pool and the grounds in tip top condition, which we really appreciated. We had been staying with family in nearby Sarlat prior to our arrival which was rather hectic and we were looking forward to relaxing and having some 'chill Tim'... for sheer relaxation and tranquility this place is hard to beat, in a fab location and we would return in a flash!

We stayed a week during very hot weather so the sparkling pool was used daily. Thonac is close to several other delightful towns and villages and the local hotel outdoor restaurant is fun, with good food.
The cottage is very well equipped with an inviting garden area. This was altogether a perfect spot for our holiday.

We had a really fabulous time at The Garden Cottage. The cottage suited us very well. It had everything we needed. Beautifully styled, appointed and decorated. And the pool was to die for (I was hardly out of it) thank you Stephen for looking after it and the garden so meticulously.
The cottage is perfectly situated being off the beaten track and so very peaceful but yet near enough to Thonac to walk down to the village for a drink or a meal. Montignac is only ten minutes drive away - a lively town full of cafés bars and shops. Lovely trips out to visit neighbouring villages all of which claim to be one of most beautiful villages in France. And they all are! Added bonus was being in Thonac for the final of the World Cup. Rob went down to the village and joined the locals watching on the big screen.

Mark and Lloyd
The Garden Cottage is beautifully kept and has a gorgeous interior, but what really impressed us was it's tranquil location within the owners grounds and the peaceful location of the swimming pool where one can laze of a sunny afternoon or two.
The cottage is approximately a 5-10 minute walk into the local village where there is a little shop selling everything to cater for your needs and a hotel restaurant that serve lovely meals at a very reasonable price. This must be tried at least once during your visit. If you fancy a larger shop there are two large supermarkets within a 10 minute drive on the road to Montignac. Montignac is a beautiful town with lovely riverside restaurants. The cottage is ideally located to visit the local sights, whether it be a château such as the local Château de Losse or Château Les Milandes with its beautiful gardens, or pretty towns and villages, our particular favourites being Saint Leon, La Roque Gageac and Domme.
Beautiful blue skies every day with temperatures hitting 36 degrees one day. This gave us a perfect excuse to spend some days lounging around by the pool and recharging in the stunning surroundings. So to sum up, with a combination of the cottage, the weather and the perfect hosts we had an amazing week and left feeling pretty sad. However, we know that we will be visiting again, for longer next time as there was still quite a lot we didn't get to see in this beautiful part of France. It was honestly one of the best holidays we have ever had. Thank you so much, until the next time.

The Garden Cottage has been beautifully restored and is very comfortable and well appointed. The amenities are excellent and the pool is exceptional. The location is wonderful because it is close to so many attractions and to a number of excellent restaurants.

We found the holy trinity of travel in our first trip to the Dordogne in as much as our stay provided the perfect property, superb hosts and a wonderful location.
Owners have renovated the property wonderfully by melding traditional Dordogne architecture with contemporary interior design that maintains the character of the property but also provides modern comforts. The location of the cottage combines a secluded rural position with easy access (5 minutes walk) to Thonac's 2 restaurants, shop and hotel bar. Similarly the main road through Thonac takes you through the picturesque Vezere valley with Montignac and our favourite Saint Leon only a few minutes drive. Médiéval Sarlat, Beynac and Domme are slightly further afield but still an easy journey. Caves to canoeing, troglodytes to trekking and food and drink aplenty are all easily accessible from Thonac and you really can make any sort of holiday from this property. C'est magnifique!

An amazing and wonderful place to stay!
We only had a week but it was a very special week, our first time in the Dordogne was made into an extra special one by staying in this fairytale cottage with the owners providing everything that you would want or need for a brilliant holiday they were the perfect hosts!
The cottage was perfect, clean and very comfortable not to mention the pool which was an added bonus we would be very happy to recommend this beautiful cottage and location for a relaxing holiday!

The Garden Cottage is a lovely place to stay in a beautiful area. It is newly refurbished and has a very classic country feel inside. Gorgeous furnishings and all the facilities that you need for a self-catering stay. The bathrooms are great. The mattresses are firm but the bedrooms are comfortable. Kitchen has everything you need, we never felt the need for anything that wasn't to hand. The hosts are very welcoming and have the right balance of checking in and leaving you to it (they live next door). They were able to tell us about local restaurants and must-visit places which was really handy. The pool is very nice, clean and very large for the size of the property. The village is lovely and Montignac is only a few minutes by car, this is a good-sized town with banks and a supermarket. Would recommend!

The Garden Cottage is exactly as described. It oozes charm, character and good taste. It was spotlessly clean. The large swimming pool and patio area is beautiful, private and well maintained.

The cottage is very conveniently located, being a pleasant walk or a very short drive to Thonac village. There one will find a good pizza restaurant / bar, a hotel with both a garden and indoor restaurant and a small supermarket. Two large supermarkets, pharmacy and petrol station are just five minutes drive away at Montignac. This is a very nice small town to visit and where one buys tickets for Lascaux.

The cottage is perfectly situated to visit the numerous places of interest in the area and the owners have provided an information brochure of local markets, events and places to visit.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 week stay and found the owners discreet, charming and helpful. Absolutely no hesitation in recommending the property to couples who want a completely relaxing and comfortable holiday.

This was our first ever holiday rental and it has set the bar very high indeed.

From the moment we arrived to a warm and friendly welcome by our hosts (Katerina and Stephen) to the time we departed with the same warmth and friendliness still on display we could not have wanted a better start to our extended holiday.

The cottage is very well appointed and is a perfect size for a couple. It had all the facilities one would hope to find to make our two weeks very much a 'home from home' sensation and provided space for the two of us to move around comfortably. The pool is also excellent and reflects the great care our hosts took in ensuring everything was perfectly presented.

The location - in the Vezere valley - is ideal for visiting the numerous attractions of the area. Pre historic caves, stalagmite and stalactite caves, fortified houses, gorgeous châteaux and so many utterly charming villages.

We even ventured into a canoe for a 12km cruise down the Vezere which allowed us to see the valley from a different perspective.

Although we love visiting different places there is a high probability of us coming back again!

Loved The Garden Cottage from the first photo we viewed on line.
We had the warmest welcome from Caterina and Stephen.
The cottage lived up to and beyond expectations.
For anyone looking for total peace and tranquility this is the place to find it.
On the other hand the area offers a mass of beautiful places to visit, within a short driving distance.
You also have the luxury of your own swimming pool, surrounded by a beautiful fragrant garden.
Caterina and Stephen go out of their way to make you welcome and are a font of knowledge of the area, but manage to do this without being intrusive.
The perfect hosts.
I hope that this little cottage will continue to enchant those who are lucky enough to find it.

Carol and Rob
This was our second stay at The Garden Cottage and it certainly not be our last.
Caterina and Steven are perfect host who were wonderful company when the time was appropriate but gave us full privacy at all other time. To be honest, they were both like good neighbours and made us feel as if we were at home.
We could speak too highly of the region, the cottage or of Cat and Steve.
Thanks for a lovely week.

We loved every moment of our stay. The Garden Cottage is pretty but so well appointed; super-clean, well equipped and charming. The pool and gardens are private and delightful. Catarina and Stephen are great hosts - nothing is too much trouble and they are just so friendly. This property is a jewel and the villages and ancient sites of the Vezere Valley make this a stunning trip.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in this beautiful, fairytale cottage. The setting is superb, from the lovely gardens around the house to the graceful trees around the pool. The large pool was the perfect place to relax, with the temperatures in our week pushing 40 degrees. The cottage itself is cool and spacious and provided with every convenience required for a comfortable stay. The location, too, is ideal for exploring the area which has so many interesting historical sites and attractive villages to visit and enjoy. Our hosts Caterina and Stephen were friendly and welcoming. They took great care to give us complete privacy but were always close at hand if there was anything we needed. We have no hesitation in recommending this beautiful cottage and hope to be able to visit again in the future.

C Krucker
This beautiful, secluded cottage is in the grounds of a historic house, both of which have been painstakingly restored by our hosts. It contains all you could need for a self-catering holiday, although there is an excellent local restaurant in the village, only five minutes walk away and others in local villages. The large private swimming pool is an added bonus. We used this as the base for a week's exploration of the Dordogne. Thonac is plum in the middle of the historic / pre-historic area of the Dordogne; the caves of Lascaux, famous for the pre-historic cave paintings, are just down the road and there are numerous ancient cave settlements nearby. A little further away, you can visit the castle at Castelnaud and its fascinating collection of ancient weaponry. We also ventured as far afield as Périgueux and Rocamadour, carrying out an in-depth investigation of the local cuisine as we went. To cap it all, Caterina and Steve are wonderful welcoming hosts, more than happy to chat about the history of the property and potential outings in the local area and keen to make sure their guests have everything they need. Highly recommended.
Finally, I would like to thank you and everyone at Pure France for the excellent service you have provided this year and am looking forward to another successful year with you.

We spent a lovely week in The Garden Cottage.

C and R
We had high expectation of this holiday and were not disappointed. The property is a piece of history in an area steeped in the past. From the moment we arrived, greeted by a couple you seemed to have been friends with all your life, the stresses of every day life evaporated. We immediately felt at home and were very quickly making plans for our next visit. The cottage looks picture postcard from the outside and there really is no detail left undone. The inside has its historic charm in place but with all the amenities necessary so that you are not required to live the Médiéval lifestyle of many some other rural accommodation in France. The rooms are beautifully and tastefully decorated and there are large bathroom and shower facilities (upstairs and down). The private swimming pool is superb and was for our sole use. Its clear waters under pine trees and a blue sky were idyllic. It was difficult to tear my wife from the pool side. The cottage fits perfectly into an area of outstanding beauty where many of the sites we wished to visit were only minutes away. The owners were very welcoming and provided good advice on the places to visit but were not overwhelming so that you could always enjoy complete privacy. We enjoyed every minute of our stay and cannot recommend it more highly. If you want to tour the area to see the 1,000 châteaux and the countless prehistoric sites in the area or just chill by the pool, this is the place for you. Thank you for a lovely week.
