Location

Monflanquin

The property is located 2 minutes drive from the beautifully picturesque, hilltop village of Monflanquin, 30 minutes South of Bergerac (town and international airport).
15 - 20 minutes walk into the village.

Monflanquin is an old bastide town with winding streets and fabulous views. All amenities in the village including large supermarket, cafés, restaurants, bakeries. Traditional street market every Thursday morning.

The Dordogne area of France is one of the most beautiful and one of the most popular. Lovely countryside interspersed with medieval, bastide towns and fairytale châteaux rise from the morning mist.

Its a great region for food lovers; all the Périgordian specialities such as Foie Gras, confit d'oie, canard and mushrooms of all types are in abundance.

Many antique markets throughout the year. All info at the tourist information office.

Bergerac (40 minutes) was once a flourishing port for the wine trade. It still today has a picturesque harbour where you can take a boat trip along the river Dordogne, or a miniature train ride around the Bastide town, viewing the many half timbered houses with terracotta decoration.

The many timbered houses with terracotta decoration that line the lanes of the old town, are wonderfully evocative of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. On one corner the wanderer suddenly finds himself 'nose to nose' with Cyrano whose statue proudly reminds the visitor that Bergerac owes some of its fame to this historic figure. Not surprisingly the annual theatre 'Le Festival du Théatre' is named after him.

A great way to tour the vineyards is by following the designated Route des vins where the visitor will be welcomed by the growers and encouraged to try their wines. The Bergerac region is sometimes called Perigord Pourpre the name deriving from the rich purple-red wines that characterize this area of Perigord.

When the subject of 'gastronomy' is raised it is usually associated with a particular region and the Perigord stands in high regard in this field. The traditional produce, such as truffles, walnuts, strawberries and the wines, together with the well-known rich specialties derived from fattened geese and ducks, is largely responsible for this fame.

Châteaux Lanquais, 30 minutes from Bergerac is great for the kids; it still has great canon ball holes in the side walls from an attack, and a removable wooden stair case. Open all day every day in July / August.

Don't miss a trip to La Roque-Gageac, a stunningly beautiful village under the towering cliffs. The village regularly wins France's 'Prettiest Village' competition. Good canoeing centre here.

Competing with La Roque-Gageac in the prettiness stakes is the village of Carennac. Elevated just above the South bank of the Dordogne river, it is best known for its typical Quercy architecture and Romanesque priory. Further Romanesque art at the Saint-Pierre church in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne.

Perhaps the most famous of the Dordogne tourist attractions are the cave paintings around Les Eyzies. There are more pre-historic caves in this area than you could ever visit in a day! Les Eyzies lies at the heart of an unspoilt area of great natural beauty with rolling hills, tranquil rivers and fascinating cliff and rock formations. It has some of the world's most beautiful caves with outstanding stalactite and stalagmite crystallizations. And the cave-lined Vézère valley has been classified as a heritage site by UNESCO. The most well-known of all is the cave at Lascaux which was discovered in 1940. The paintings date back some 17,000 years.

Sarlat-la-Canéda features the highest concentration of medieval, Renaissance and 17th century facades of any town in France. Its prosperity was a reflection of the privileged status it was granted in return for loyalty to the French Crown during the 100 years war.

Behind the nondescript rue de la République are narrow lanes and archways, and ancient ocher-coloured stone town houses rich in ornamental detail. Protected by law since 1962, Sarlat-la-Canéda's buildings now form an outdoor museum.

The town is also famous for one of the best markets in France. Every Saturday the great Sarlat-la-Canéda market is held in place de la Liberté, along with a full-scale fair that attracts locals from all around the surrounding countryside.

The exceptional number of buildings registered or classified as historical makes of Sarlat-la-Canéda the first European city in term of inheritance. For this reason Sarlat-la-Canéda has been used in many movies. On the first Sunday in July the Félibrée, a typical Périgord village fair where everybody is disguised, animates Sarlat-la-Canéda.

TRAVEL:

Approx 10 - 12 hours drive from the Western channel ferries - a trip via Dover is best combined with an overnight stop on the way. Motorail will deliver you from Calais to Brive or Bordeaux. Ryanair fly from Stansted airport to Bergerac regularly. Bergerac airport is approximately 30 minutes away.

Flybe also fly to Bergerac from Southampton.

Had a great stay in a fire we could happily live in. Weather was kind to us and we made good use of the pool and ping pong! Enjoyed being able to stroll to the bars and restaurants.

Lovely relaxing week. Pool great with lovely views over Monflanquin. Made good use of the BBQ and table tennis. Great wildlife - Lizards, rabbits, bats and birds of prey to name but a few! View from Monflanquin beautiful. Had many great days out, overall a lovely relaxing holiday.

The Quest family

We had an amazing stay! The beds were very comfortable and the pool is incredible! Lunch time on the veranda was a highlight as it’s so peaceful. We had lots of fun during our stay especially because of the table tennis table. Overall the stay was absolutely incredible and we loved every minute we were here.

The Nicholls and the Heartons

We’ve had a wonderful week staying in Castelfret. We’ve enjoyed visiting Sarlat, La Roque Gageac and Bergerac, but most of all we’ve enjoyed the pleasant walk or short drive to the lovely little town of Monflanquin and eating at Le Prince Noir, La Grappe au Raisin and a lovely breakfast at the boulangerie in the village.
A perfect week in the loveliest, best equipped villa we have stayed in. We have had lots of fun in the pool, playing table tennis and lunches on the veranda in such a beautiful and tranquil setting.

The Rose family

We have had a wonderful and baking hot two weeks in Castelfret. The house is so well equipped and lovely. Enjoyed the pool and leisurely meals on the terrace. Have eaten out in Monflanquin many times, particularly enjoyed Le Jardin. Had a fun trip to Bonaguil Castle too. All in all a perfect holiday, thank you!

The Whittakers

We thought the last house we stayed in was the best, but Castelfret topped it! The pool, the house, the location were exactly what we were looking for. So relaxing…we will definitely be back soon.

Paul & Fiona

Had a great two weeks at Castelfret. Been staying in gites/villas in France for over twenty years and have found this property to be one of the best. It is well equipped and well maintained, very clean due to Louise and her team. Gary is always at the end of a phone if help is needed. This is our second visit to Castelfret and will hopefully not be our last.

Jim & Tesni

Castelfret has exceeded our expectations. We booked only 2 weeks in advance and yet everything was sorted clearly and quickly. On arrival the house was immaculate with thoughtful, comfortable and practical design. We loved our time in and around the pool, and enjoyed the restaurants and beautiful buildings of Monflanquin. Monpazier and Gavaudun were our favourite trips. We hope to return with family/friends some time.

Gemma, Sam & Avril

Our time in France has been very enjoyable due to the comfort and tranquility of this beautiful property. We found it well equipped and spent countless hours relaxing by the pool. The weather has been kind to us and we made the most of exploring the surrounding villages such as Monpazier & Monflanquin, and we also particularly enjoyed visiting various markets in the mornings. The barbecue was great for when we wanted to cook in the evenings, looking out over Monflanquin in the sunset. There was nothing keeping us from enjoying our stay, and we wouldn't hesitate to return.

Ray, Gill & Abby

We have had a fantastic time at Castelfret. The house is incredibly well equipped and the location is perfect. Being able to walk into Monflanquin has been a real plus. We have enjoyed meals at Bar des Arcades, Le Bistrot du Prince Noir, La Bastide des Oliviers and Pizzeria La Baldoria ( recommend to book ahead). The thursday night market is a must (try the snails!)

The first 11 days have been extremely hot and although the remaining days were cooler it allowed us to visit Monpazier, Belves and St.Cyprien - all worth a visit.

Plenty of wildlife to see from the terrace, including red squirrels, hares, woodpeckers and amazingly a pair of hoopoes!

All in all an amazing house in an amazing location.
