Lascaux caves, discovered in September 1940 by 4 teenagers who descended into the prehistoric caves, discovered cave paintings made by Paleolithic man, more than 17,000 years ago.

Today visitors can visit a replica of the Lascaux caves, Lascaux II, which opened to the public in December 2016.

The original Lascaux caves is a closed site to enable the original prehistoric cave paintings to remain intact. The caves became a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979.
