Maison de maître in the Languedoc

A handsome and imposing maison de maître

La Maison Carrée is a handsome and imposing maison de maître, a Mansion built around 1890 for the local winegrower, a 'noble' who gave it as a present to his son and his son's bride on the occasion of their wedding.

It was built in an elevated position at the entrance to the village. Now in the 21st century as the village population has grown and the village itself has expanded La Maison Carrée occupies a prominent central position a short walk from the main square.

Comparatively modest proportions...

As was the custom at the time the property began life with comparatively modest proportions with the premise that it would be extended depending upon the future prosperity of the son and his wife. Accordingly another floor was subsequently added and to this day you can see from the detail in the cellar how the elevation was redesigned in order to provide a new internal staircase, new terrace and a repositioned entrance and steps.

Sympathetically restored...

Much later, around 1970, the then owner created a further floor out of the existing roof space. The current owners sympathetically restored the property around the millennium including the addition of a swimming pool whilst carefully retaining all the period features including the fireplaces and the beautiful floor tiles.
