A 15th century fort with guided tours

Accessible from the D900 or by pathway from the A9 autoroute rest area, set between Etangs de Salses and the Corbières lies the 15th century Forteresse de Salses. Guided and unaccompanied tours are available.

The fort

Originally at the site was Salses-le-Château which dates back to 1007. This château was destroyed during a siege in 1496.

In the late 15th century, Spanish architect Francisco Ramiro Lopez constructed Forteresse de Salses.

Forteresse de Salses consists of 3 areas; the living quarters, the battlements and the keep. It was home to 1500 men. Surrounded by a 20 metre moat its imposing stone stuctures measuring 110 x 84 metres was hoped a deterrent to attackers.
