Château Vivy de Saumur in Pays de la Loire

Château Vivy de Saumur, set in France's famous wine region

The most central of France's wine regions, the Pays de la Loire arcs South-West of Paris, and encompasses several departments, including Loire Atlantique, Vendée, Mayenne, Sarthe and Maine-et-Loire.

The region's prime vineyards and wine châteaux are scattered close to the Loire, France's longest river, most within striking distance of the towns of Nantes, Angers, Saumur and Tours.

Saumur is the centre of the region's sparkling-wine production, a rival to Champagne made with the Chenin Blanc grape, while the area around Saumur-Champigny makes red wine based on the Cabernet Franc grape.

As well as Fontevraud, a magnificent 12th-century Benedictine abbey containing the tombs of the English kings Richard I and Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Four miles from Saumur, Château Vivy de Saumur is a spectacular 17th century castle surrounded by vineyards and wine châteaux that offer tours and tastings.
