La Maison Isle de Vignes with private pool

When in France, holiday like the Romans!

Article

The Languedoc region in the South of France is renowned not only for its Cathar castles, but also for its Roman history and antiquities left behind from an occupation stretching over 500 years.

Today's visitor can still enjoy the sights of magnificent amphitheatres in Nîmes and Arles, the Pont-du-Gard aqueduct and remnants of the Via Domita, a Roman super highway connecting Rome right through to Spain.

The region was administered from the ancient capital of Narbonne, a safe harbour whose entrance was protected by the beautiful wooded island of La Clape.

When the Roman Centurions needed some leisure-time safe from any disgruntled Gauls, they would use the island to relax and started to develop the local vineyards. This legacy can be observed today with over 50 wine domains. Château Camplazens or 'Camp of Leisure' even derives its name from the ancient Roman settlement it is sited on.

Today thanks to medieval engineering ingenuity the 'island' is now connected to the mainland and allows the modern visitor to more easily holiday like a Roman and enjoy the magnificent scenery, golden beaches and fabulous wine, including those produced by the renowned Gerrard Bertrand estate.

Maison Isle de Vignes is a modern house that nestles in the heart of La Clape in the village of Armissan. The local shops have all the essential amenities just a short stroll down the road. It provides spacious accommodation for up to 10 people with its own private secluded pool and terraces.
