The 124th annual French Open begins on the 18th May 2020.

Since 1925 the French Open has been played on courts at the Roland-Garros stadium in Paris.

The Roland Garros Championship is 1 of the 4 Grand Slam events, along with the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open held annually.

Between the years 1891 - 1907, tennis competitions have been played on a sand court surface. Between the years 1908 to present, tennis competitions have been played on a clay court surface.

The first French Championship held in 1891 was won that year by the French man, H. Briggs. The women singles first year began In 1897. Mixed doubles competition first began in 1902 with the woman's doubles first beginning in 1907.

Games of tennis played on clay courts puts players under higher pressure, as the surface is a lot slower than playing on a grass / hard courts. Big server style players tend to not perform as effectively on clay compared to grass / hard tennis-courts.
