Gordes in the Luberon

Gordes in the Luberon

Tourism

Gordes is one of the most beautiful villages of Luberon where many movie stars and artists have made their home. It is one of the most famous 'perched villages' or villages perchés in France, the castle dating back to the 11th century.

The village of Gordes offers a huge choice of traditional restaurant and café bars.

Due to its privileged position, its exceptional charm and its typical architecture, Gordes has been listed as 'one of the most beautiful villages of France'.

Places to visit in Gordes.

Set in a tranquil valley is Sénanque Abbey, a abbey with Cistercian architecture. Cistercian monks today inhabit it. Visitors can explore the 12th century abbey church, its cloisters, dormitory and chapter house. Monks tend the fields of lavender that surround the abbey.

The cellars of the Saint Firmin Palace is a semi-troglodytic site a registered 'Historic Monuments', carved out of the rock. Visitors can explore Gordes's hidden past during the Middle Ages. A light and sound show explains the relics and artefacts discovered and tells the story of the restorations of the cellars.

Take a walk along the 'calade', a cobblestone street constructed with vertically placed limestone stones forming steps that were calculated to allow easy passage for donkeys hoofs to carry heavy goods in and out of the village of Gordes.

Visit the 1,000 year old castle at the centre of Gordes. Through history it has be used as a prison and a warehouse for storing harvests and from the 1970's until present day, it has been home to a museum of contemporary art and its halls used for exhibitions.
