5 little-known villages in southwestern France to discover

When we talk about the South-West of France, the images that come to mind are often those of Biarritz, Saint-Émilion, Sarlat or Toulouse. But beyond these flagship destinations, there are a multitude of preserved villages, sometimes forgotten by guides, but overflowing with charm, history and authenticity. Away from the crowds, these rural pearls offer another way to travel: slower, more intimate, more human. Here are five little-known villages in the Southwest to explore for an extraordinary stay:

1) Auvillar (Tarn-et-Garonne) - The charm on the banks of the Garonne

Auvillar is classified among the Most Beautiful Villages in France and remains little frequented by tourists. Located halfway between Agen and Montauban. It offers spectacular views of the valley. Its old circular stone hall, its flowery alleys and its bird's eye view of the Garonne make it a poetic stopover. The heart of the city has a round, paved square, lined with arcades. Around the alleys wind the half-timbered houses, art galleries and small cafes. Pilgrims from Santiago de Compostela often stop there, seduced by the peaceful beauty of the place.

On Sunday morning you will also find its small market, a feast for the senses. Auvillar is a perfect stopover for lovers of heritage, local gastronomy: foie gras, prunes from Agen, confits and wines from Tarn-et-Garonne are tasted there.

2) Montreal-du-Gers (Gers) - The taste of Armagnac

In the heart of Gascony, perched on a hill, Montréal du Gers is a bastide with soothing charm, known for its vineyards and its local brandy: Armagnac. Here, time seems suspended. In summer, music festivals and night markets transform the village into a Gascony party place. Surrounded by vines as far as the eye can see, this small village with quiet charm lives to the rhythm of the wine seasons where Armagnac is king and it is not uncommon to come across an improvised tasting at a passionate winemaker. While strolling through its streets, you will discover Gascon architecture, an old laundhouse, an imposing church and a hall that comes alive on market days.

In summer, Montreal lights up: night markets, traditional music concerts, medieval festivals. There is a spirit of conviviality rooted in the local culture.

3) Loubressac (Lot) - A postcard on the valley

Overlooking the Dordogne valley, Loubressac is a village made of ochre stones, offering a breathtaking view of the Dordogne valley and remains away from the major tourist flows since it is less frequented than Rocamadour or Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. It seduces with its charm, its well-kept gardens and its half-timbered houses. It is also an ideal starting point to visit the nearby Padirac chasm. It is also classified among the Most Beautiful Villages in France.

The church, the castle, the small squares offer exceptional views of the Gorges de la Dordogne, the castle of Castelnau and the green valley. It is a good starting point for bucolic hikes, bike rides or cultural visits (Padirac, Carennac, Autoire). A tip: plan a picnic facing the horizon.

4) La Romieu (Gers) - The village of cats

With its majestic cloister and alleys where adorable statues of carved cats are hidden, the Romieu seduces lovers of history and fairy tales. It is said that cats are the guardians of an old secret. Between legend and heritage, this village invites you to stroll.

5) Bruniquel (Tarn-et-Garonne) - Between cinema and the Middle Ages

Known for having served as the setting for the film Le Vieux Fusil, Bruniquel is a perched medieval village, with its two castles and steep alleys. We discover a spectacular view of the Aveyron gorges. It is a dream place for lovers of history and French cinema.
