Birthplace of fauvism

Collioure, a small Catalan fishing port, is an emblematic village in the eastern Pyrenees. Matisse stayed there in 1905 and produced 15 canvases, around forty watercolors and a lot of drawings. His friend the painter André Derain joined him. In Paris, at the Salon d'Automne that the art critic Louis Vauxcelle, seeing the paintings of this summer spent in Collioure, launches the word "fauve". Thus was born Fauvism.

Collioure is an excellent base for visiting the Côte Vermeille and its surroundings. Not far from Cerbère, the last village before the Spanish border.
