Le Mas Gaugeac, so peaceful and what fabulous views...

'It is so peaceful and what fabulous views!' is normally one of the first statements made by visitors to Le Mas Gaugeac.

Standing proud of the surrounding countryside, this ancient 'domaine' is surrounded by 40 hectares of fields and woodland. Once connected to the fabulous Château de Biron the carefully renovated manor has an interesting history.

During the renovations a secret room was found in the attic where people were hidden during the Second World War

During the renovations a secret room was found in the attic where people were hidden during the Second World War as it was owned by a gentleman from Alsace. A spontaneous visit from an elderly lady who had lived in the house as a child refugee gave us further insight as did another lady who had lived with her parents in the 'maison de guardien', her father being the farm manager. They were part of the then French government's plan to encourage Bretons and Italians to come to the region to replace the workforce lost in the First World War and so, being Breton, had to learn French when they arrived.

Explore the Dordogne region with its many châteaux and the Vesere valley with its prehistoric caves and troglodyte dwellings

Le Mas Gaugeac is just one small part of an area rich in history and a perfect venue from where guests can appreciate and explore the Dordogne region with its many châteaux and the Vesere valley with its prehistoric caves and troglodyte dwellings. There is the glorious Dordogne river with the historic gabarres and then, of course, the magnificent bastide village of Monpazier.

Built by the English during the reign of King Edward I, is considered to be one of the finest and purest examples in France and can be glimpse across the valley from the rear terrace, where restaurants, shops and seasonal activities can be enjoyed.

A Provençal Mas with all the reception rooms leading onto the front and rear terraces

The design of the manor house, built in 1673, is in the style of a Provençal Mas with all the reception rooms leading onto the front and rear terraces. The open feel of the property makes for relaxed and easy living. There are places to quietly read, or games such as table-tennis and boule as well as the all-important heated swimming pool which is set in its own private and secure garden. In addition, all the bedrooms are ensuite so they are ideal for multi-generational family holidays or groups of friends.
