The Bubble Palace

It’s one of the most extraordinary pieces of architecture in the world. Situated on a hilltop on the Cote d’Azur with far-reaching views over the Mediterranean, Pierre Cardin’s famous ‘Bubble Palace’ could be yours. It’s up for sale.

The unique property was designed by Hungarian architect Antti Lovag and built between 1975 and 1989. Lovag wanted to build a home that mimicked humanity's earliest dwellings in caves. Its undulating lines, circular spaces and lack of corners were the trademarks of Lovag, who said he considered the straight line to be ‘an aggression against nature’.

The 1,200 square metre house comprises a cluster of interwoven bubble spaces with ten bedroom suites, decorated by a specific artist, including Patrice Breteau, Jerome Tisserand, Daniel You, François Chauvin, and Gerard Cloarec. Outside, with specatular sea views, waterfalls spill over the building’s ochre surfaces with more than 8,500 square metres of tropical gardens and terraces with swimming pools. There is also a 500-seat amphitheatre.

The property is built over six levels on an undulating rocky outcrop of the Massif de L’Esterel, a volcanic mountain range known for its red rocks. The palace overlooks the bays of Cannes and Nice.

The Bubble Palace was acquired by fashion designer Pierre Cardin in 1992 as a holiday home at auction in the early 90s after the death of its original French industrialist owner. For the following two decades, the Italian-born designer hosted a string of celeb parties and fashion events at the palace.

On the market, it is priced at €350m (£305m), one of the highest asking prices ever for a European property. If you cannot afford to purchase the property, the Bubble Palace can be rented for a daily rate of around €26,000.
