The Cité de Carcassonne

Step back in time in the old city of Carcassonne.

Visit La Cité, the world famous walled medieval city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

'La Cité' is truly a sight to behold, with fairy-tale turrets and winding streets to explore. As well as the many restaurants and shops on offer, you can walk around the perimeter of the walls, take a horse and cart ride (great for kids!), soak up the history and enjoy the far-reaching views.

A stunning sight from the outside, the best place to view the city in it's entirety is from the bridges which cross the river into the new part of Carcassonne.

After a turbulent history most famously linked to the Cathar religion, it was very nearly lost completely, and close to crumbling to the ground. A ground breaking restoration in the late 19th century revamped it to what it would have looked like in medieval times, with a few extra flourishes (the fairy tale pointed turrets were a new addition).

You can now wander the atmospheric cobbled streets and imagine what life would have been like in this notoriously dark time in history. Inside you will find souvenirs and gift shops, boutiques, galleries, museums and a vast array of cafés and restaurants offering mouthwatering local cuisine.

You can easily see the sights in one day, but something tells me once you experience it you will want to come back for more!
