The Great Sites of Occitanie: between heritage and nature

Occitanie boasts treasures of history, geology, and exceptional landscapes. Among these, the Grands Sites Occitanie occupy a special place: sites labeled for their heritage value, their scenic interest, and their tourist appeal. In Ariège, there are two emblematic ones: Foix – Montségur, medieval cities, and Niaux – Mas d’Azil, prehistoric Pyrenees. For Pure France guests, these sites can serve as anchor points to imagine authentic itineraries combining a charming villa stay and unforgettable discoveries.

1. Foix – Montségur: The Power of the Middle Ages and Catharism

From the Château de Foix to the walls of Montségur, passing through the surrounding fortified towns—Mirepoix and Saint-Lizier—this part of Ariège bears the mark of a vibrant history. The Château de Foix offers activities.

Montségur, perched at an altitude of 1,207 meters, is a powerful symbol of Catharism, a legendary fortress whose stones evoke emotion.

Recommend a sunset stroll to the Château de Montségur: the light on the ridge is particularly beautiful.

Organize a private guided tour or a customized itinerary, focusing on the history of Catharism, ideal for history buffs.

2. Niaux – Mas d’Azil: Underground Mysteries and Cave Art

Prehistoric Times Under Your Feet

In this part of Ariège, prehistory is on the agenda: the Niaux Cave is one of the few decorated caverns accessible to the public, with drawings dating back to the end of the Upper Paleolithic period (approx. 14,000 years ago).

The Mas d’Azil, with its large 65-meter-high natural arch, is a major archaeological site where research has unearthed significant remains.

Nearby, the La Vache Cave, the Prehistory Park, and the Bédeilhac Cave complete the range of experiences.

For your curious travelers, join a “darkness & storytelling” evening at a nearby villa, where a specialist can guide you through the cave floating in the darkness (with lamps or guidance). Offer combined tours: a morning visit to the caves, followed by an afternoon nature hike in the surrounding gorges.

Offer a prehistoric-themed dinner at your villa—with ambiance, inspired menus, and a campfire (if permitted).

3. Nearby: Carcassonne, Toulouse, Canal du Midi... must-see destinations

While the Grands Sites of Ariège are at the heart of the project, Ariège is well-positioned as a starting point for other major sites in Occitanie: the medieval city of Carcassonne, the Canal du Midi, the Pic du Midi, and Albi or Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges are among the region's must-sees.

For Pure France travelers, these sites allow you to extend your itinerary without multiplying your travels to faraway destinations.
