The most beautiful hikes in the Pyrenees

Nestled between Toulouse and Spain, Ariège is a preserved gem of the French Pyrenees. With its wild mountains, verdant valleys, high-altitude lakes, and picturesque villages, this department offers a multitude of hikes for all levels. For hiking enthusiasts or weekend walkers, discover a beautiful selection of hikes in Ariège.

1) Soulcem Pond and Brouquenat Pond

Located in the upper Vicdessos Valley, this hike is a classic. You'll start from the Soulcem Dam, with its spectacular mineral landscape and breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. The route can be completed as a loop, passing by the Brouquenat Pond for an extended walk.

Level: Medium Duration: 4-5 hours Starting point: Soulcem Dam

2) Montcalm Peak (3,077 m)

For those who love a challenge, Montcalm is the highest peak in Ariège. It's a demanding climb, but the panoramic view of the Pyrenees, as far as Aneto, is rewarding. This hike is for experienced hikers.

Level: Difficult Duration: 8 to 10 hours round trip Departure: Pinet Refuge

3) Bethmale Pond

This beautiful lake is one of the most photogenic in Ariège. Bordered by fir forests and an easy trail, it's perfect for a family hike. It's an opportunity to discover local folklore. Level: Easy Duration: 1 to 2 hours Departure: Pond parking lot

4) Ars Waterfall

Considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Pyrenees, Ars Waterfall is a must-see. At 246 meters high, it offers an impressive spectacle, especially in spring.

Level: Medium Duration: 3.5 - 4 hours round trip Departure: Aulus-les-Bains

5) The Chioula Loop

Starting from the Col du Chioula, this panoramic loop allows you to walk along the ridges while admiring the Ariège peaks and, on a clear day, even as far as the Spanish Pyrenees. Ideal in all seasons, including snowshoeing in winter.

Level: Easy to Medium Duration: 2.5 to 3 hours Departure: Col du Chioula

6) The Orlu Reserve and the Naguille Pond

The Orlu Valley is a haven of biodiversity. In addition to the magnificent scenery, you might be lucky enough to encounter marmots and chamois. The Naguille Pond, perched at over 1,900 meters, is worth a few hours of climbing.

Practical advice before you leave

Be sure to check the weather forecast; the Pyrenees can sometimes be dangerous during storms.

Equip yourself with sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water.

Respect nature: don't leave any litter and stay on marked trails.
