The label "Most Beautiful Villages of France" was created in 1982. It has 159 villages scattered in 14 regions and 70 departments. 3 criteria are important: the villages have a maximum of 2000 inhabitants, have two protected monuments and proof of the municipal council's collective support for the project. Then, further criteria to evaluate the quality of the village in terms of heritage, urbanization, architecture and environment to finally award the label.
