Under the Bages boardwalks
Take an afternoon stroll across Narbonne's saltwater lagoons. A change from the beach, this offers a completely different landscape and is great for wildlife lovers and those wanting to get away from the crowds of the beaches.
Just 7km outside the city of Narbonne in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, the village of Bages offers an interesting alternative to a visit to the local beach.
The village of Bages is situated not on the coast but on the saltwater lagoons (étangs in French), which are home to oyster growing beds and wonderful birdlife, including flamingos.
There is a network of wooden boardwalks which allow you to walk right over the still waters of the lagoon.
There is a great children's playground which makes a lovely picnic spot for families, or you can eat at the clifftop restaurant 'Le Portanel' specialising in seafood and with wonderful sea views.
