Week in Dordogne: nature, gastronomy and heritage

The Dordogne is a very popular destination in the South-West of France, a greedy wild and rich in history and unique landscapes. It offers an immersion of French authenticity. Discover the ideal itinerary for an unforgettable week in the Dordogne, between classified villages, gourmet tables and walks in the middle of nature.

Sarlat-la-Canéda, pearl of Périgord Noir

Sarlat is a pearl of the Périgord Noir with its medieval alleys, admire the golden facades, sit on the terrace to enjoy a first plate of foie gras or magret.

  • The Sarlat market (Wednesday, Saturday morning)

  • A guided night or costumed tour

  • Dinner in a traditional restaurant

Châteaux and panoramas

The Dordogne Valley is nicknamed the valley at 1001 castles, visit the Château de Beynac, perched on its cliff, then go for a ride in gabarre (traditional boat) to the Roque-Gageac.

  • Castelnaud Castle (Museum of Medieval War)

  • Coffee break in Domme, bastide with panoramic view

  • Dinner at a local inn with river view

Cave and garden

Enjoy a day dedicated to prehistory and nature. Explore the famous Cave of Lascaux IV, in Montignac and relax in the gardens of Marqueyssac, suspended above the valley. Do not hesitate to book the visit of Lascaux online in advance. And also enjoy lunch on the banks of the Vézère, in a local restaurant.

A gourmet day

This is the perfect time to discover local flavours: foie gras, truffles, nuts, and Bergerac wine. Visit a duck farm or a truffle farm, then take a tasting break at a winery near Monbazillac.

Discover:

  • The Walnut Museum in Castelnaud

  • A wine cellar in Bergerac or Pécharmant

  • Dinner around a cassoulet or a duck confit

Canoe on the Dordogne

A sporty and refreshing day, rent a canoe in Vitrac or Laroque-Gageac and let yourself be carried by the river by admiring the castles as the water. Gentle alternative: bike ride, or on foot on the marked trails. Picnic recommended; with products from the Sarlat or Domme market.

Villages and markets

Discover typical villages such as Saint-Amand-de-Coly, Belvès or Limeuil, classified among the "most beautiful villages in France". Stroll, chat with the artisans and make your last gourmet purchases. To buy: goat cheese, homemade jam, honey, ceramics or linen.

Relaxation and sunset

Last day, take the opportunity to slow down with a beautiful walk in nature, a late breakfast on the terrace and a nap in the shade of a fig tree. End your stay with a sunset on the heights of Domme or the Marqueyssac garden.
