The 10 Best French Châteaux for Celebrations
Nowhere does grandeur quite like a French château. Beyond wrought-iron gates and long gravel drives, you may find formal gardens with clipped topiary, acres of woodland, vineyards, towers and salons that have seen several centuries pass through them. Some are grand and impeccably restored, others softer around the edges, with weathered stone and rooms that carry the character of the house.
For celebrations especially, there is something irresistible about borrowing all that history and calling a château home – if only for a few days. Read on for ten of our favourite French châteaux, each worthy of a celebration in its own right.
Château Marchesseau
At Château Marchesseau, the vineyards belong to the estate. Fifteen hectares surround the house at Lalande-de-Pomerol, which produces its own wine and sits within easy reach of both Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. It is a particularly lovely setting for a celebration – wine from the estate, dinner beneath the covered terrace and nothing but vines beyond the garden. Five en-suite bedrooms and a heated pool complete the picture.
Chateau La Noraye
Among the vineyards of Bourgueil, Château La Noraye has the easy grandeur of a house that has been standing for centuries. Parts date back to the 16th and 17th centuries, while 29 hectares of organic vines spread out around the estate. Inside are eight en-suite bedrooms and a cinema, but much of the pleasure is outdoors, beside the 20-metre heated pool or looking across the surrounding wine country. Tastings take place on the estate, and private chefs and wine tours can be arranged for days centred around good food and local wine.
Château Grandchamp de Chablis
Deep in the Burgundy countryside, Château Grandchamp de Chablis is an 18th-century country house surrounded by three acres of grounds and its own small vineyard. Chablis lies less than half an hour away, so some of France’s most celebrated Chardonnay is close at hand. Inside, a baby grand piano sits at the top of the stairs and the rooms have the comfortable proportions of an old family home. Outside, there is a heated pool, a private tennis court and a terrace overlooking the garden – a particularly lovely spot for an aperitif as night settles.
Château de Briand
A long drive through the grounds leads to Château de Briand, an elegant 19th-century house set among three hectares of lawns and woodland in the Charente countryside. Built in 1887, it has since been carefully renovated, with contemporary interiors sitting comfortably inside its more traditional shell. The kitchen, dining room and living room all open directly onto the terrace, giving the house an easy connection with the gardens. Behind it, a heated pool is tucked into its own peaceful corner, ideal for celebrations that call for plenty of space.
Château du Pic de Rigaud
Few châteaux can claim another château as part of the view. Château du Pic de Rigaud sits high above the Aveyron countryside, looking across the valley towards the 13th-century fortress of Najac. The house itself dates to the 19th century and is surrounded by ten acres of private grounds, with broad views stretching beyond the gardens. Down by the large heated pool, a summer kitchen and covered dining terrace make outdoor living particularly easy. Najac is only a few minutes away, its medieval streets and hilltop castle always somewhere on the horizon.
Château de Neveu
Château de Neveu sits in classic Dordogne countryside, surrounded by 30 hectares of oak and chestnut woods midway between Bergerac and Périgueux. Dating back to 1741, the house carries its age beautifully, with exposed beams, flagstone floors and great stone fireplaces throughout its rooms. Walking and riding trails lead away through the grounds towards neighbouring hamlets, while terraces closer to home look out across the valley. There are seven bedrooms, including one tucked into a renovated building across the courtyard, and a south-facing pool overlooking the countryside.
Château Mézard
There are centuries of history behind the walls of Château Mézard. The Gascon château dates back to the 13th century and stands within 42 acres of grounds, where formal gardens give way to wildflowers, grassland and private woodland. Its restoration has preserved the character of the old house, while outside the views stretch far across the surrounding valley. There are several terraces for sharing meals, but the summer dining room is especially lovely – opening directly onto the garden and softly illuminated after dark, it feels made for dinners worthy of a little occasion.
Château Trieux
A long private drive winds through the grounds towards Château Trieux, passing formal gardens before reaching the courtyard. Inside, an original stone staircase hints at the château’s past, while the rooms themselves have the relaxed feel of a much-loved family home. Beyond the lawns, the estate continues into woodland and down towards the river. There is a heated pool, a private tennis court and plenty of space to spread out, while evenings can be spent on the terrace or inside beside the piano and fireplace.
Le Domaine des Hiboux
With origins reaching back to the 14th century, Le Domaine des Hiboux sits within an extraordinary 100 acres of Loire-Atlantique countryside. Gardens open into fields and woodland, crossed by private walking and cycling trails, with birdsong a near-constant among the trees. Guests are spread between the main château and a separate garden house beside the pool, giving larger groups plenty of room. The Atlantic is not far either – the beaches at Les Moutiers-en-Retz are around 15 kilometres away, bringing the coast within easy reach of an otherwise beautifully secluded country estate.
Château Bellevue
With its twin towers rising above the Basque countryside, Château Bellevue has all the proportions of a traditional French château as well as the Atlantic close by. Biarritz and Bayonne are within easy reach, as are the surf beaches around Hossegor, giving days here a mix of country and coast. Back at the château, eight bedrooms make room for sixteen guests, with generous living spaces made for getting everyone together.
