Collonges-la-Rouge, a journey through time

Located in the Limousin region of France, Collonges-la-Rouge is an extraordinary village that seems straight out of a fairy tale. History and heritage of Collonges-la-Rouge

Collonges-la-Rouge takes its name from the red sandstone which constitutes the main stone of its houses and buildings. Founded in the 8th century, the village prospered in the Middle Ages thanks to its strategic location on the trade route linking Lyon to Bordeaux. The narrow, winding streets, half-timbered houses and medieval towers bear witness to its rich historical past.

Sandstone is formed by cementation of quartz grains. Often red and ocher in colour with red pigments.

Château de Vassinhac

Don't miss the Château de Vassinhac, restored from the 16th century. You can visit different period furnished rooms, including the bedroom of the writer Colette, the Louis XVI salon and many others... A spiral staircase will take you to a vaulted cellar where photos of the château de its origin to its restoration.
