Immerse yourself in rural Provence

Having travelled all over the World for work, there was something about Provence and the South of France which remained with the owner of Villa Coste Rousse. Since visiting the area several times on holiday as a child and which inspired her and her family to buy a second home in the unspoiled village of Callas deep in rural Provence.

Callas with its narrow, cobbled streets, fountains (16 in total!) and charming shady square is perched high above the Gorges du Pennafort and the vineyards of Provence. Despite remaining almost unchanged for centuries, the village has a small grocery, an amazing boulangerie, a traditional tabac and four excellent restaurants. There's also a market every Saturday. All of which are within walking distance of Villa Coste Rousse. What better way to start the day than absorbing the wonderful views from the balcony, whilst tucking into freshly baked croissants?

Your days at Villa Coste Rousse which is a former farm house surrounded by terraced olive groves, can be spent either relaxing by the private pool, enjoying the breathtakingly views of the Provençal countryside or exploring the surrounding areas.

Susan, Mike and Matthew, your hosts say, 'you have an enormous choice; visit the 'villages perchés' too numerous to mention, with their weekly famers' markets, fabulous restaurants all offering an inexpensive 'Menu du Jour'. Then in complete contrast you have the Côte D'Azur within 45 minutes' drive.

Having owned the villa since 2011, your hosts would be happy to recommend what to do and see in the area.

Matthew's favourites: In the village: buying breakfast in the Boulangerie and having a coffee at the Hotel de France in the square – they don't mind if you bring in your breakfast! Day out: The Gorges du Verdon, Lac de Sainte-Croix with a picnic. Hire a pedalo and sail under the spectacular gorge.

Mike's favourite In the next village Bargemon: Dinner on L'Estanco's terrace in the square Day out: Visiting the plethora of vineyards where you can pop in to taste the unique Vin de Rose de Provence. During our last visit we had lunch at the Bistro at Château de Berne. The food, wine and setting are amazing.

Susan's favourite: In the village: browsing the Saturday market for fresh produce and almost anything else Day out: shopping and people watching in Saint-Maxime is fun, you can also take the boat from there to Saint-Tropez.

However, you spend your day, you must take an aperitif and watch the sun go down from the pool or the balcony. As it goes dark the village church is floodlit and the skies filled with stars – no light pollution at all.
