Located between Sarlat and Bergerac, in the heart of the Dordogne, it is the largest chasm in Périgord. It is also called "The Crystal Cathedral". Two possibilities to enter the abyss: - in the original way, by the natural entrance, suspended by a nacelle on the 360° rotating floor (11 people max per trip) - through a tunnel, through the converted entrance, on foot. A magical sound and light show awaits you.

New: sound and lights

This year the Crystal Cathedral is reinventing itself: it is so named for its immense underground vault decorated with a multitude of concretions. Lighting allows visitors to better appreciate the prowess of nature.

Traditional visit

Famous in the 18th century for its legends, the abyss was only explored in 1907. Today it is the largest developed cavity in Périgord, with a tunnel with a huge underground vault with walls decorated with crystallizations of exceptional density and beauty. The new lighting supported by musical accompaniment completes the originality of this site. The visit lasts 1 hour, commented by experienced guides leaving an unforgettable memory. This year is inaugurated the nacelle allowing to discover the abyss even better. The new gondola allows a panoramic view and rotates randomly allowing passengers a 360 degree rotation.

The history of Gouffre de Proumeyssac

Curious are the stories of the abyss, with many legends, especially that of the ducks. A legend would say that a pair of ducks, thrown into the hole, would have reappeared after a while with burnt wings, in Perdigat, commune of St-Chamassy.

Beyond the legends, the chasm of Proumeyssac was explored despite its summary lighting by Mr. Galou finds a real interest "meeting a considerable number of crystal columns measuring from 80 cms to 1 meter in diameter and from 5 meters to 6 meters in height.
