Location
The property is located off a small road in Sarlat-la-Canéda, a two minute walk (or less) to restaurants, shops, medieval town centre with pedestrian streets, pavement cafés and artisan stores.
Three large supermarkets, 5 minute drive.
Situated between the rivers Dordogne and Vézère, Sarlat-la-Canéda is a medieval market town and capital of the Périgord Noir. Stroll along the paved lanes of the old town or sample the Périgordian gastronomy, amongst the finest France has to offer. Take in the hustle and bustle, the smells and noise of the market, sit at one of the cafés and watch the world go by.
Sarlat-la-Canéda has something for everyone and is a perfect base from which to set off and explore the sites and surrounding countryside. Steeped in history and pre-history, counting the world famous site of Lascaux within easy reach. From the dawn of time man has left his mark in what must surely be described as one of the most beautiful parts of France. From cave dwellings to fairy tale castles the views and scenery are breath-taking.
Lots of Golf courses nearby. Nearest is Montfort about 15 minutes.
Hot air ballooning, various local companies. Micro-lite air craft and light aircraft flights available from Sarlat - Domme aerodrome.
Paintball, very good site near Roque-Gageac. Roque-Gageac (approx 15 minutes) is a stunningly beautiful village under the towering cliffs. The village regularly wins France's 'Prettiest Village' competition. Good canoeing centre here.
Competing with La Roque-Gageac in the prettiness stakes is the village of Carennac. Elevated just above the South bank of the river, it is best known for its typical Quercy architecture and Romanesque priory. Further Romanesque art at the Saint-Pierre church in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne.
Perhaps the most famous of the Dordogne tourist attractions are the cave paintings around Les Eyzies. There are more pre-historic caves in this area than you could ever visit in a day! Les Eyzies lies at the heart of an unspoilt area of great natural beauty with rolling hills, tranquil rivers and fascinating cliff and rock formations. It has some of the world's most beautiful caves with outstanding stalactite and stalagmite crystallisations. And the cave-lined Vézère valley has been classified as a heritage site by UNESCO. The most well-known of all is the cave at Lascaux which was discovered in 1940. The paintings date back some 17,000 years.
Brantôme is a very popular and pretty town. Well worth a visit, there are several churches and abbeys to discover as well as the Musée de Reve et Miniatures. Perhaps the best thing to do in the town is to firstly take a stroll along the beautiful balustraded river banks and then to choose your evening fayre at one of the many excellent restaurants.
Just North of Brantôme is the hamlet of Villars. The hamlet itself is unexciting, but it is surrounded by lovely countryside and is a great base from which to explore Château de Puyguilhem and Saint-Jean-de-Côle. The Grottes de Villars (pre-historic caves) are just past the hamlet and were discovered in 1958 and feature cave paintings.
Canoeing on the Dordogne is hugely popular. There are rental centres on almost every curve and corner of the river. Some of the bigger centres are based at La Roque-Gageac, Martel, Argentat and Beynac.
Brive airport 40 minutes.
Bergerac airport 70 minutes.

Hornby's from Surrey and the Knowles from West Virginia - 2024
This is an updated and more comprehensive review of our stay in June at the wonderful Maison des Cordeliers in Sarlat.
After a very long journey down to Sarlat from Calais via Orleans through some frankly biblical rain storms, it was a relief to arrive at such a welcoming home! The house was very cosy and had all the home comforts you would want.
The beds were super comfortable (that's saying something from a fussy bed person) and there was plenty of storage for luggage. Kitchen and living area were again stocked with all you needed and the satellite TV was a bonus for the Euros!
As the weather improved, we spent a lot of time round the lovely pool or when it got too hot the veranda was a welcome spot to get some shade and relax with a book. The air con was also massively appreciated!
We had never stayed in this part of France before, normally heading to Provence or the Côte d'Azur, but the town did not disappoint. Beautiful medieval architecture, fabulous markets and lovely shops and restaurants. Sarlat is a real wonder and the fact it's an easy 5 minute stroll from the house is such a bonus.
I can honestly say we had a wonderful, relaxing, break at Maison des Cordeliers and would be delighted to stay again the next time we find ourselves in the Dordogne.
Colin Hornby - 2024
Thank you for a wonderfully relaxing stay. We know the area well but usually stay in more rural areas. What we absolutely loved most was being able to stay so close to the incredibly beautiful town of Sarlat whilst having the feeling of being completely remote! The wonderfully enclosed garden and pool gave us a rural vibe with all the benefits of being able to walk to amazing restaurants every evening. Your villa definitely provided the best of both worlds for us and we will definitely be back.
The Zwaga Family - 2024
Beautiful house with pool, nice and private yet a short walk into the centre of Sarlat. The house is very well equipped and cosy for those days when the weather didn’t play ball! The surrounding area has so much to offer. We will be back. We had a wonderful family vacation in your beautiful house. We will definitely be back. Sun, sea, pool, food, canoes! What more do you need... Oh and wine!
The Hornby/Knowles Family - 2024
To Geoff and Jackie, Thank you for a lovely week in your beautiful home, so homely and welcoming. Beautiful town, didn’t explore further a field as we just wanted to enjoy the pool and relax.
Elaine and Family - 2024
Really enjoyed our stay, so convenient for strolling into town. Sarlat and the surrounding areas are beautiful. The house and location are perfect. Definitely worth a return visit.

To Geoff and Jackie, Thank you for a beautiful stay
In a villa quaint, by sunlit pool.
Whispers of France, where dreams are the rule
Delicious tapas at “Coin Coin” we ordered a few
Amidst lush gardens kissed by a dew
Crepes in the morning, Oh what a delight
Golden and warm in the soft light
The market near by, vibrant and bright
Colours and scents, a sensory flight
The bakery hums with a fragrant embrace
Bread and pastries in a delicate lace
This house, This haven, where moments distil
A villa in France, serene and still.
The Cotter Family - 2024
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Maison des Cordeliers, it is the perfect location to enjoy peace and quiet after a busy day exploring. We hope to return!
Piere Lacombe, Bankok, Thailand - 2023
How appropriate to stay in this house and emerge ourselves in the Medieval village of Sarlat! Relaxing by the pool with a cool glass of wine was perfect after a long day of wandering through the town or the beautiful pays de la Dordogne!
Jo Martyn - 2023
We have loved our holiday in Sarlat, so many perfect moments made our holiday a memorable one, delicious restaurants, stunning Chateaus and a peacefully (long )canoe trip along the Vezere. France once again you have delivered. Merci.
Amelia, Cambridge UK - 2023
We had a lovely relaxing week staying in this wonderful house, which is perfectly located for exploring the area-it was just what we needed. Sarlat is beautiful and we enjoyed learning all about the history of this Medieval town as well as sampling the local cuisine. WE hope to come back soon.
David and Diana, Chipping Sodbury - 2023
What a fantastic house in such a lovely location! We had a really wonderful break and enjoyed visiting the local châteaux and villages. Jackie was so prompt in replying to messages. The house and pool provided everything we needed. We definitely would love to return sometime. Thank you so much.
Jack, Wendy and Lara - 2023
We had a wonderful few days in this gorgeous house and it was everything we had hoped for-lovely French feel to the place, excellent location and a fantastic pool (particularly during the heatwave we had). The house was equipped with everything we needed and more-you really have thought of everything! Thanks again, we hope to be back next year. Merci!
Steve Bruce, The Cotswolds - 2023
What a wonderful stay we have had at this glorious villa. We could not stay out of the pool as we were so lucky with the weather. The pool inflatables were fantastic, children and adults enjoyed lazing around in the pool for hours on end! We had some great nights in Sarlat at 'Le Pub' watching the street performers. The villa is very well equipped and laid out allowing for us to have our own space as well as a social space. We hope to return next year.
Ann and Dave, Somerset - 2023
We had a lovely time in this fantastic location. The villa is perfectly located. Our 3 favourite restaurants:
1, La Belle Etoile - La Roque de Gageac
2, Hotel Dieu
3, La Romana
Thank you Jackie and Geoff. A lovely home with character and a real French charm.
Josie and Sam Pearson - 2023
This is our 7th visit to the Dordogne and at least the 6th rental at "Cordelliers" Thank you Jackie and Geoff for buying this property and continuing to allow lucky people like us to stay here.
We always love a long lunch at Le Vieux hogus in Tremolat, lovely drive. We stopped at himeuil on the confluence of the Vezere Dordogne rivers to see another lovely village with a stony beach. Book a table under the plane trees in the garden, easy to book as all the reception staff speak English.
This trip we visited the gardens of Eyrignac which we saw 20 years ago-much changed and lovely but Marqueyssac are still our favourite gardens with its cliff top views to Castlenaud, Beynac, Faynac Chateaux and the town of Roque Gageac.
Don't miss Lascaux IV, book online - this time we did it last minute and got in at 3.30pm English tour, great for all ages, especially the children as they get their own laptop!
Buy your foie gras and confit of duck at the E Le Clerc supermarket - much cheaper and great quality, rather than paying extortionate prices in Sarlat.
A lovely drive if you are interested in Bastide towns is to start in Belves, worth a quick look for its 11th century centre and 15th C covered market. Then onto Monpazier, Byron, Chateau Byron and finally Monflanquin, a great place for lunch (park at the top of the hill next to Elise St Andrew)
Of course Rocamadour and Padirac caves are another must and if you feel like a big day out add Colognes La Rouge to the itinerary. When visiting Rocamadour, enter from the top, drive past all the parking costing 5euro or so and head to the well signposted "Le Chateau" parking which has 500 places and is free. Take the lift "Ascenseur" down into the town, buy the more expensive ticket to go all the way to the bottom of Rocomandour town, see the Sanctuaries, churches, walk up into town. Afterwards take the lift back up to the car and walk to the Ramparts.
MARKET DAYS:
Monday: Beynac, Les Ezyies (small one on the river)
Tuesday: Le Bug - highly recommend
Wednesday: Sarlat and Saint-Cyprien
Thursday: Domme and Monpazier
Friday: La Roque-Gageac
Saturday: Sarlat
Sunday: Carnac, H'muel and Saint-Cyprien (highly recommended)
On Wednesday evenings from late June to mid August Belves has a night food stall market which id fun, bring your own cutlery, glasses and nice plates if you don't want to eat off paper.
Wine shop - an excellent wine shop, no more expensive than the supermarkets with great advice from English speakers is in Les Eyries - Vin Blanc Rouge, 3 Ave de la Prehistoire.
Shauna, Isobel and Olivia - 2023
We are back again!
Thank you so much Jackie and Geoff, we had the most fantastic stay again. The house was beautiful and the pool was perfect. We made the most of the silos and spent 99% of the time outside.
Drinks at Le Pub and dinner at plenty of new restaurants! No car needed. Thank you!
Audrey and Steve, New York - 2023
What a gem! What a find! You have thought of it all down to lavender sachets in the drawers. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your delightful house in the most charming of places. We love all things duck and Sarlat offers the best. Exploring the surrounding countryside has been a pure pleasure. We had the good fortune of spending June in Sarlat and enjoyed the village come alive with music. We hope to come again and thank you.
Marie Hurley, Ireland - 2023
We were so lucky to be able to stay in this beautiful house. So quiet in the garden, sipping drinks relaxing by the pool, yet the bustling town centre is only a few minutes walk away. The markets on Wednesday and Saturday are well worth a visit. Recommend Le Regent for food located in the old town. The house itself is charming, with everything you need for a perfect holiday. Even with the high temperatures outside, the house was lovely and cool inside. We had a fantastic time and hope to return again soon.
Marco - 2023
A real oasis in lively Sarlat. So well located. Walk everywhere. Farmer’s market. Restaurant. Gorgeous, bustling village. Great pool. Great garden. Comfortable. Jackie is very helpful and caring.
Christine M - 2022
First visit was in 2010 for two weeks in May. This one-week revisit was a long-delayed family Christmas holiday. The house is charming, well-maintained and comfortable. The location is perfect for walking to local cafes and restaurants, shops, the amazing Saturday market and in-town sites of historical and architectural interest. Outside town, just 15 to 30 minutes by car are numerous chateaux, gardens, museums, prehistoric sites with cave paintings and more. So much to do and then a lovely place to come home to. Jackie was a wonderful host
Emma, Claire, Louisa and Jodi - 2022
Wow, what a totally wonderful stay!
The house has everything you could ever need. It is secluded and quiet , yet so close to everywhere. We even had a dip in the pool!!! We had a lovely walk around Beynac and had a delicious lunch there at Hotel Du Chateau. The local wine shop kept us well supplied-we had lots of the incredible cheese.
Thank you so much for everything, we really hope to come back soon!
Shauna, Liv, Isobel and Lucy - 2022
We had the best week here in this beautiful house, such a perfect location, the house had everything we needed. We didn't have a car but everything was in walking distance. We spent every evening having drinks at 'Le Pub' in the centre of town, very nice cocktails.
Restaurant Chez le Gaulois served the best cheese and meats platter, couldn't recommend them more.
WE LOVE IT HERE and will definitely be back next year.
Thank you Jackie and Geoff for this beautiful stay.
Jamie Robinson - 2022

We hope to return next year. Thank you Jackie and Geoff for a wonderful holiday.

We have had a wonderful couple of weeks in Sarlat.
Sarlat and the surrounding area has so much to offer. We enjoyed the local markets, a trip to Chateau Der Milandes and of course canoeing down the Dordogne river.
The location of the house is amazing, just a few minutes walk into the centre. With the first week of our stay the temperature were in the high 30s and the pool was an absolute godsend-a real highlight for us, we spent many hours just relaxing and enjoying the weather..
The house itself was great and met all of our needs for a two week holiday. Thank you Jackie for all your help answering all my messages.
Will be back soon.
Alexandra, Danny, Oscar and Darcy - 2022
Thank you for sharing this charming oasis in Sarlat with us. We have greatly enjoyed our week here. The house is just perfect and the locations incredible.
Highlights include: The town of Sarlat itself, Goufre de Padirac, Domme, Rocamadour, canoeing on the Dordogne, visiting Beynac and Castlenaud and of course the pool!
We have had a fantastic and unforgettable holiday and hope to return.
Danny B - 2022
Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children) had a fabulous time exploring Sarlat and the Dordogne from this terrific base. The house is perfectly located and the pool is a godsend after a full day of sightseeing. I would highly recommend this property only then it will be harder for us to book again.
Carl Magnus B - 2022
We had a fantastic stay. The house is absolutely lovely, the pool and garden likewise. Sarlat is superb with its old well preserved center. We loved just walking around there and have great meals in the restaurants (there are plenty).
Elaine - 2022
Wonderful time here in Sarlat. This house is perfect for seeing the area. Lots of great things to do within easy distance. The house is in a beautiful location and with the high temperatures this week the pool has been a godsend. Everything in the house is geared for visitors and it's really well equipped.
This is my first time in the Dordogne and it's absolutely beautiful. I will certainly come back soon.
Thank you Jackie and Geoff for a wonderful holiday.
Sara Surplice - 2022
What a wonderful stay, lovely house, garden and pool so close to Sarlat town. Local shops are excellent, recommend a sneaky martini at Cafe Le Gambella just down the road on the right hand side. Butchers are excellent, cooked some delicious meals using their produce. Sarlat market is great for veg and cheese.
Try the walking tour of Sarlat, pop into the tourist office to pick up a map, definitely worth while as you will venture down hidden alleyways and discover the history of Sarlat.
Thank you Jackie and Geoff for the use of your beautiful home and giving us wonderful memories. We hope to return.
